New to the Cub Clan

Postby Norfolk Steve » Fri Nov 10, 2006 2:49 pm

Hello to All

My name is Steve and I'm new to the cub world. I recently purchased my first cub, which I believe is a 1950 model. The serial number is 111795.

I've posted a photo of it in the 'tractors' section of the cubfest photo gallery. It has be quite well kept, and had a custom built cab put on it.

I look forward to discussions with all you Farmall Cub Forum folks. Maybe I'll meet some of you sometime. Feel free to let me know what you think of the my cub, and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'll post a better photo of her outside in her element.

regards,
Steve
1950 Cub

Steve:

First, Image to the greatest forum on the internet, and to the Cub Family. You will find that all the folks on this forum are kind, helpful and just full of Cub info and knowledge. They also happen to be the finest folks I have ever met :!: :D

Exactly where in Canuckville do you reside??? I am originally from Timmins but have spent time in Inuvik, Alert, Edmonton, Vancouver (& vicinity), Kingston, Ottawa, Nova Scotia until finally ending up in God's Country -- New Brunswick :!: :!: :D :D

I like the pic of your cub and you are right, she is well kept. Have you named her yet :?: Also, that Cab is interesting. More pics and details on that Cab would be useful to many I think.

I bet you won't be able to stop at just one Cub though... :!:   Just ask many of us who have become members of the Multiple Cub Club... it can get addictive...

Ok, so here is the spiel Image:

I would suggest that you read this thread: New Members and Visitors, Please READ Prior to Posting. There are many great links to informative pages such as the ATIS FAQ's 1 and ATIS FAQ's 2, The Best of H.L. Chauvin who has written very interesting articles on troubleshooting common problems with your Cub.

Also, you might want to visit the Cub Manual Server as there is tons of info on servicing, maintaining and re-building your Cub. In addition to this basic information, there are also a number of other useful tools available on the server. There is the Specialty Services page which has contact info for neat stuff like getting your seats recovered, buying quality Decals, Serial Number tags and a host of other neat items. Also there are the Parts Pages - both Used Parts Suppliers and New Parts Suppliers pages with links to quality dealers. I am always looking for YOUR favourite dealers for New and Used Parts to include here. These pages are intended to complement our Official FarmallCub.com Website Sponsors:

I would also recommend that you visit Binder Books and purchase the three most important manuals you can own for Maintenance, Repair and Rebuilding your Cub. These are the Owner's Manual, the GSS-1411 Service Manual and the TC-37F Parts Manual. Although they are available on the Cub Manual Server, it is better is you also have your own paper copy. Binder Books is the only Authorized IH Publication Reprint House and they have the best quality manuals available. Most other's are not of the same quality. Just a personal thought here, the I&T Shop Manuals, although helpful in some areas, really are not sufficient for the job. If you wish though, they are good additional reference works.

IF you really want to get the skinny on all things Cub, might I suggest you get a copy of Ken Updike's Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet's :?: . While you are at it Original Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet is Ken's latest addition to the series. Along with Guy Fay's Letter Series Originality Guide, these are three must have's in anyone's collection.

In addition to the above information, don't forget to check out the various articles that are available to help with your Repair, Restore, Rebuild or just your Maintenance Projects. There are a number of sub pages such as Electrolysis or Rust Zapper's, Maintenance Tips, Jigs and Techniques, Implement and Part Sketches and of course the Paint, Decals & Other Finish Questions which has the Paint Chart and the Paint Committee Decisions links.

Oh, and while the program still lasts.. you might want to check the Announcement: Navistar Free Gas Cap Offer - On-Line Form thread at the top of the Cub Forum and send away for the new style safety cap before that program runs out as well.

I truly hope that you enjoy your Cub and that you will be a frequent contributor to the forum. Again, Image to the Cub FamilyImage :D

Thanks Rudi for the very warm welcome, and thanks Scotty for bringing my photo over to this thread.

I live in Norfolk County, southwestern Ontario. This County is/was the leading area for tobacco farming, and because of this, quite possibly is the richest area of Ontario for Farmall tractors. Being a sandplain with relatively little clay/silt/mud soils, a great number of Farmalls are in relatively good condition.

New Brunswick certainly is a wonderful part of North America, as are many other areas throughout the U.S. and Canada. Fortunately, my job permits me to travel quite a bit binationally throughout the Great Lakes region and sometimes elsewhere.

Occupationally, I have two professions. I am a wetlands and waterbird scientist by day and a woodworker and trim/flooring manufacturer by evening and weekend. The idea of owning a Farmall has been growing on me since I moved to this area 6 years ago, so when I saw this little cub for sale on the roadside locally, I couldn't resist the urge. It took the better part of a weekend for me to bring my wife around to the idea that buying it was 'O.K.', and I think that it was the ideas of wagon rides through local extensive bush trails that did the trick.

I've a lot to learn about maintenence, repairs, etc., and I feel truly blessed that the Farmall Cub Forum is available as such a useful network and resource for all us cub owners.

I especially enjoy reading and learning about others on this forum, and how helpful all the folks are to help fellow cub club members. I'll try my best to be of similar help in any way possible, but I'm afraid that I'm a Rookie when it comes to cub related matters.

...what a great group of folks y'all are!

regards,

Steve

...oh, and Rudi, yes, you're right, the multiple cub bug might already have struck, because I found myself almost subconsciously looking at other cubs for sale on a 'just for the heck of it' basis...

...I'd better start finding places to hide my money to cover my next (secretive) cub purchase, which my wife cannot know about!

Maybe the sooner I introduce her to other cub owner spouses, the sooner she'll come around to 'accepting' things.

Well, yup.. I have a stash that I use for stuff like that.. one of my other hobbies helps provide the necessary resources. I rebuild computers and stuff.. so I can make a tidy sum on the side occassionally. It did take about 2 years of saving to get Granny.

Hmmmm... Wetlands and Waterbird scientist.. funny that... I have been rebuilding my property to bring it back from polluted by the mill next door to restoring by hand the brook back to being able to sustain Speckled Trout... after 15 years, we have finally seen our 3rd year with young trout in the brook. Combined with my pond, we are putting trout back into the area.

Also, my wetlands, I am trying to conserve.. we have migratory Canada Geese as well as increasing varieties of ducks that have been making our pond and wetlands home -- this is our 4th year with young breeding pairs..

Kinda cool. We also are reviving our woodlot and making it into a sustainable mini-forest. Which includes providing suitable habitat for wild life. 10 years ago we reintroduced rabbit to the area to help with the native Hare rebuilding and now we are seeing a return of the native Peregrine falcon and other raptors up to and including the Bald Eagle which is native to this area.

On the professional side, outside of my career as a communications specialist in the Canadian Forces... I am a journeyman cabinet/furniture maker by trade and have my interprovincials in Ontario and NB..

It constantly amazes me how many of us have the same hobbies and interests.

As far as the getting your better half involved.. there is the Better Half Forum as a start. My better half has been trying to get others to share their hobbies and interests on the forum, so that when they all meet at the different CubFests, then they already have an idea who everyone is and what their hobbies and interests are.

Speaking of CubFests.. CubFest 2007 is going to be held near Dayton Ohio.. and should be close enough for you to make it...
