I know this is an older thread but I recently bought an old number 12 Cole planter like yours, and in about the same shape yours was when you bought it. You did a really nice job and I would like to ask you a question about removing the press wheels as mine are locked up.

Thanks. As I said, the press wheels are froze up and wont turn. One side has what looks like a roll pin through it and the axle, the other has a large set screw. I have been soaking it with PB blaster for a week, everytime I walk by it, I give it a shot. The shape of the wheel make it difficult to get behind it or between it, or to use some kind of puller on it. I am wondering if I could heat the wheel a bit around the axle, take a brass drift, and drive the axle out through both the press wheels or would I cause damage? I am not sure whats in between those two wheels; will the axle move through them? I thought about making some wood wedges and hammer them in between the wheels in an effort to separate them.

Mine has the two levers behind the feritilizer unit, they have now freed up, not sure what they do but I am guessing they engage/disengage the fert drive.

If you can get the roll pin out the pin just drives out. Wood wedges may help, heat as well.

Ok, thanks for that. I will probably have to drill it out. I have already ordered some parts for mine; the fertilizer chute (which I havent quite figured out how that is supposed to bolt up lol) and a fert hopper. I also came across an older fert colter opener, mine did not have that, it has a drop type thing which looks like it will drop the fertilizer right in the seed furrow. Not quite sure why they did that but doesnt seem right to me but its a factory thing, I have seen it on others. I see you fabricated a lot of that, you have some skill there for sure.
