FORDSON DEXTA: Make offer or Pass?
Decided to start a new post on this one. I've been contacted by the owner about purchasing this tractor. It has a Kelley FEL, front mounted hyd pump, looks to be small capacity (has a single bucket tilt cylinder), and has not been run in a while. It's 3cyl Perkins diesel, open station, PTO, probably early 1980's vintage. Mechanical condition unknown, no missing parts but looks rough. Should I make a offer or pass? Tractor wt is about 3000 lb, loader wt unknown, probably 1500 lbs. TKS

Re: FORDSON DEXTA: Make offer or Pass?
If you can get it cheap enough you could always part it out or resell it. You know when buying something that isn't running or hasn't run in a while they can dollar you to death. You have any tractor junk yards around your area? You could always see what they would give for it and sell it to them if you get it cheap enough. I always look at a used tractor with a FEL that the front end is probably worn out, never know what the previous owner did with it.

Can't say much about the Dexta, but Dad bought a Super Dexta and it was, for its size, a beast. Also like a Timex (took a lickin and kept on tickin) for many years. From my experience with the Super Dexta, steering might be an issue with a FEL.

Re: FORDSON DEXTA: Make offer or Pass?
UPDATE ON THE DEXTA: The deal came together and I have moved it to it's new home. I need any information about the fuel system and general operator's manual type details. 3 cyl Perkins/Ford diesel, this one should be a fun project or a total bust!!!

Sonny, got the manual. Thanks. It will take me a while to go through all the info. At least this will help me try to get it started.

I got a call about another one for around $800 not running. I didn't want to fool with it. Let me know if you want it!

Re: FORDSON DEXTA: Make offer or Pass?
Chase, didn't see your post until today. Was at LA Cubfest this past weekend. I'm maxed out at this time, ran out of room and funds. Thanks for thinking about me. Mine as a CC Kelly model 500 loader which needs a new home.

Re: FORDSON DEXTA: Make offer or Pass?
I had no idea that there would have a recent post about the Dexta. It is a tough machine not made in China but Leyland in Great Britain at that time. We have to remember the technology required to save themselves during the wars. The English were masters of machining. Hard pressed during sieges and things we can't comprehend. Entire blocks and sections in flame. That's what became horrid with all the cluster bombs burning entire cities to the ground.
Can't take that memory again but afterward, they knew how to make some great tractors. They pulled together all the engineering and there were farm tractors alongside aircraft. Some were so good, they made it to America.
Now it is all old stuff but history repeats itself. When I was in there with my brother and took the top section off (hydraulics section) there were gears ..which were things of beauty. I said don't mess with that. You wouldn't think .. oh yes put another boot atop the shifter. Not saying that any better or worse but too good to be unprotected. The thief got a serious tractor and probably trashed it.

Re: FORDSON DEXTA: Make offer or Pass?
Update. Sorry about the previous ramble. The Forsdon Dexta was fine tractor. His was rough when he got it but became better as he owned it. It had live hydraulics and two stage clutch. We never had to split it apart. When we repaired the hydraulic valves for the 3-point, that whole top cover came off. Only then could you see the nice heavy gearing.
