any diesel mechanics?

Postby john2189 » Fri Feb 10, 2017 10:34 pm

I have a Terex Loader with a Detroit 6v71. It started to blow oil out the exhaust, we thought the turbo was leaking so we got another turbo and it did the same leaking. so we started investigating more. we pulled the valve cover off the side that was leaking and found that two of the four exhaust valves were missing but we found a few remnants of them, one is still stuck in the valve guide. It does still run good, no miss or power lose other than pouring oil out the exhaust. I thought since the motor is basically junk, and it does run halfway decent with the missing two valves, and the older versions of this motor has two valves instead of four, I thought about welding the hole in the valve guide where the valve is missing to stop the oil and run it till it don't run no more....only thing I can think of is the head of the broken valve is lodged in the top of the piston, if it breaks loose, it could go through and ruin the turbo. What do you think?

If you go through all the trouble to weld it, why not just fix it right and be done with it?

If you do not get the remaining pieces of the valves out they will most likely pass through the new turbo damaging the fins or pass through to the other cylinders. The rockers for the missing valves will be slapping around leading to other issues. At this point the engine should be repaired or replaced. The engine at this point is probably still a good core for exchange or rebuild. Running it now will continue the damage leading to more money when the time comes to rebuild or replace. Just my opinion.
