Forney MIG Welder

Postby Don McCombs » Fri Jan 13, 2017 2:35 pm

Anyone familiar with this brand? I have an opportunity to buy a 7 year old NOS, 180amp, 220V, MIG welder at a very reasonable price. Advice and opinions are welcome.

Forney is a well known and pretty much respected name. If it is anywhere near reasonably priced I would grab it. Their website is forneyind.com It looks like the current version of your description lists fir around $700.

Before you purchase the welder, find out where the nearest repair shop, service center for the welder is located.

If you can, try out the welder before you purchase it.

I suppose the unit below is the closest to it in today's production...

https://www.forneyind.com/products/forn ... mig-welder

The box says that the torch/gun is a Tweco, so I assume that wire, tips, etc. would be readily available. There is no dealer locally, but there are three within an hour's drive. The asking price is $225, but I think that is probably somewhat negotiable. The 2010 sticker price was $479.

Find out what kind of gas the welder uses.

Since it's supposed to be NOS, I'd spend some time talking with the dealer/seller.

Retailers do not normally keep higher priced inventory in stock for 6 or 7 years. They would rather sell the item at a discount to turn over the funds and not keep the item in stock beyond the end of the year and pay the property taxes on it.

The more I think about it, I would pass.

Try 200,---if no go then hand him the $225.! if it welds and looks decent, sounds fair price!
I gave $80. for an old Century and had to get a few things for it.--seams to be ok,--EXCEPT that I am a stickman but use whatever is handy! LOL!!! thanks; sonny

tweco is the most common easy parts to get, just tips and nozzles, I use mine constantly, at least 5 times a week, they last me for years , check the duty cycle and how thick it is rated for, the thicker it can weld and the length of time will tell you if its a good welder, I use the argon, nos gas mix, cost more but much better cleaner welds

Forney has been around for a long time and, as far as I know, have built good quality welders. I don't know much about their MIG units, but I wouldn't be afraid of them. As mentioned, the Tweco gun is easy to get consumables for. It sounds like a great deal but what's the back story? I'd ask a few questions.

The back story is that it is at our local, family owned, Ace hardware store. It arrived at the store in 2010. It sat in the store, unsold, until it was moved into their warehouse to make room for other merchandise. Recently, they decided to "clean out" all of the oddball stuff that had accumulated there and sell them for half of the marked price. The welder is one of those things. The box is opened, but the unit still has all of the little plastic bags covering everything and they are still taped shut from the factory. Doesn't appear to have ever been out of the box. Never sold and returned. I saw their inventory records on their computer. Basically NOS.

If their price is anywhere near reasonable I would jump on it before someone else does.

You should still have a warranty with the purchase (if needed) and Lincoln consumables are always available.
