Bought some more junk, few questions..,

Postby DZG » Thu Mar 24, 2016 7:18 am

So i just bought 3 old Bolens "tube frame" lawn tractors. Whole lot of them for 60 bucks (score! I hope)

Tractor 1- Model G9, nice shape, looks like it was used very little, no deck or motor

Tractor 2- Model G9, worst shape of the bunch, missing steering wheel, looks like something fell on it, no deck, but has a recoil started 8hp briggs that looks complete and turns over well

Tractor 3- Model G10, better shape then tractor 2, but not as nice as tractor 1, has a 10hp tecumseh electric start, that also spins over good and is complete. No steering wheel on this one either, but has a deck that looks solid

So my questions are...

Where can i find bolens parts? These tractors seem to be mid-late 70s vintage, ive found a few places but nothing that seemed to rock solid.

Are bolens good machines or are they generally junk?

My plan is to fix the nice G9 up using the briggs from the junk G9, and use it once completed to do small tasks and maybe even mow with if the G10 deck will fit, anyone know that answer?

The G10 id like to get running and use as a trail riding toy (yes im that guy).

Thanks in advance

In my opinion, Bolens made quality tractors. A good source of info might be Mytractorforum.com. There a lot of knowledgeable garden tractor members on that site.

Above, another source of information on Bolens. Have to sign up for free membership. Has quite a number of manuals for free down load. Also links to individuals/dealers handling Bolens parts.

Only had one Bolens. Only equipment with the tractor was a snow blade. Tractor ran fine. Problem was that with wet heavy snow, didn't work. Light dry snow, worked great.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I used to have a G-12. http://www.samsbolens.com/parts.html and http://sonnybolenstractors.com/ are good resources.

Thanks for the replies guys. I finally got a chance to tinker a bit, the old briggs fired first pull on some ether, and the tecumseh supposedly ran last spring.

Now to solve my steering wheel issue :/ lol. I might try to do some barnyard engineering on the G10 since i dont care what that one ends up looking like, i got a steering wheel laying around off a 87-91 ford truck, along with a complete junk column i may yank the shaft and try to weld it on the mower, lol we will see.

I think i did good though considering what i paid.

I have a solid state unit for a HH 100 Tecumseh engine, NIB. My problem was bad wire to coil, would not carry enough amps to properly fire coil. New wire from alternator to coil fixed it.
