KAIZER JEEP CJ5 year made
I'm hoping that someone will be able to help me with the year my CJ5 was made. The Serial Number plate on the left side firewall engine compartment is JEEP/KIAZER JEEP CORPORATION/TOLEDO, OHIO and the numbers are: 8305 015 261676. From the information I have been able to collect from the internet the first 7 numbers identify it as a CJ5 Universal, Open (no cab), left hand drive, 4 cylinder F134 engine. The last 6 numbers (261676) is the sequence serial number that started when KAIZER MOTORS acquired WILLYS OVERLAND in about 1960. I'm hoping someone has a JEEP with a sequence serial number close to this that might help me ID the Month/year that mine was made. Some JEEP websites indicate the first digit (2) of the last six numbers also indicates a F134 engine. Mine has the F134 engine, serial number is 4J504823B. My best information so far is probably Sept/October of 1969 and since model year started Sept 1st it would be sold/titled as a 1970. The PO bought it new but no longer has any documents. Any comments or suggestions on how to continue the search? Thanks for any help. Stan

Re: KAIZER JEEP CJ5 year made
No title as far as I know. Alabama does not require a title on any vehicle older than 1975. I've read some posts that show a sticker with a "build" date but I don't know where to look for it. Anyone ever seen one like that? Where would it be located on the vehicle? Thanks.

Re: KAIZER JEEP CJ5 year made
Keep in mind that in the past it was not uncommon to title a vehicle as the year in which it was sold, not the year it was made. I don't know when it switched to a specific model year regardless of when it was sold. That probably varies with the manufacturer and which state. I know of instances in the '40's and up into the '50's. By the '60's it may have been model year only, not sure though.staninlowerAL wrote:.......... Re: KAIZER JEEP CJ5 year made
I have a 1971 CJ5 With a SN 8305 017 374122. This CJ has the hard top, V6, and positraction as well as a PTO front Winch. According to my old Chiltons Service Manual the 8305 indicated that it is a CJ5. The 017 may indicate the year 1971. The 4J on the engine number is as you say, an engine size. The AMC Jeeps used the thirteen digit Vin. The 1970 models may have been the first to have the side reflector/lights on the fenders.

Thanks, my internet search ID for the "017" part of the number indicates the Buick 6 cyl engine. Some info says the first digit of the last 6 numbers also indicates 6 cyl. Mine has the side reflector/lights on the hood and are somewhat rectangular in in shape. Rear lights, stop/tail is not recessed, also has backup lights.

Barnyard, see my note on the lights, thanks. I'm leaning more and more toward about Sept or Oct 1969. Stan

The 017 is a three part breakdown as I had indicated.
0 = Special Model Code (Possibly Tuxedo park, or other model)
1 = left hand Drive
5 = f4-134 smog control or a 7 = 225-V6 smog control

I have never seen marker lights on the hood during those years. Do you have any pix?

None yet but I'm trying to get this to the point where I can make some progress with it and will get some. The PO bought it new and says everything is original except the paint color. StanBarnyard wrote:I have never seen marker lights on the hood during those years. Do you have any pix?

Got a couple of pictures, the round "parking light" is about 4 inches in diameter and has 68 as the last characters in the information around the outside edge. The yellow one on the hood could be a reflector, I forgot to look for any wires going to it.

Re: KAIZER JEEP CJ5 year made
68 was the first model year that DOT requires sidemarkers. Since those look kind of "grafted" on, im going to guess its a very early 68, prolly made using leftover 67 metal, so jeep had to come up with a way of getting rid of the parts, i would assume by the mid-late 68 model year they would have been placed in their more usual location

Along those lines I have a '68 Chevy half ton. I was resided in MA for a while and loved taking it to the vehicle inspection station there. They would always try to ding me because "the side marker light is out". They would never notice that all four were out. Depending on my mood and their attitude would depend on how I answered. If they were nice I would tell them it was made in '67 as a '68 model and only vehicles manufactured after Jan 1 1968 had to have side markers. (Chevy started putting the reflectors in for the new model year but just no wiring harness. Anything they built after Jan 1st got the wiring harness). If the inspection guys were jerks, one even smacked my fender with his fist fairly hard "because sometimes there's a loose connection", I would let them remove the reflector and be confronted with no wiring to it, there isn't even a cross hole in the back where you stick the bulb socket in and twist. It was never punched because there was no socket to go in it. They all had the same response at this point ........... mumbling.

Re: KAIZER JEEP CJ5 year made
Thanks for all the information. This project is on hold for now but I'm still gathering information. Also found some info on the last 6 digits of the sequence number of CJ5 of this vintage: if the first number is 2 = 4 cylinder, if the first number = 3, Buick Dauntless 6 cyl. which Kaiser acquired the rights to from GM before selling out to AMC. GM then reacquired the rights to the Dauntless 6 cyl and used it for several years and AMC went on to use their engine in the CJ5 until the end of production of the CJ5.
