Roller Pump

Postby BIGHOSS » Sun May 17, 2015 6:38 am

My pto 4-roller pump is locked up after sitting this winter. I am soaking it in AT fluid now. Any thoughts on freeing it up. Also, I hear mixed results on rebuilding the rollers. Some say buy a new pump, as a rebuild is not very effective.

It probably depends on what was in the pump the last time. My experience with roller pumps is that the liquid gets into the bearings and causes siezing from seal failure. If the rollers or housing gets pitted from corrosion it will cause lower pumping pressure. New rollers will help with this but will not restore it to previous output condition. The cost of a roller kit plus bearings and seals is not too great but if you count labor cost then it gets closer to replacement cost. After use, I always flush the pump with clean water for 5-10 minutes then fill it full of oil and store it with the oil in it. Seems to keep the siezing from happening. Stan

Ron, take your pump apart and look it over. Spray chemicals are mostly very corrosive and can make a mess of the iron pump pretty quickly. If it's not too bad, you can probably clean it up and be good to go but if it's a big mess, you're probably better off to replace it. I've had issues with them, in the past, now I load them up with oil before storing them. As far as rebuilding, it just depends on what you find. If it's in good condition, there's no reason it won't live a long happy life with a kit installed.

Stan posted while I was pecking the key board, I think we're on the same page.

Got it going! Thanks Stan and Gary.

Removed 4 bolts from end plate. It was hard to separate the end plate from shaft, which as it turned out was the problem. Had to get pretty aggressive with chisels and screwdrivers to pry it off. The shaft was binding in the end plate recess. Took several attempts at cleaning and polishing, but it is now working.

Looks like I need to plumb a tee near the pump fitting to allow easy access to add oil when needed. Also, need to do a better job of flushing when finished.

Thanks again.
