Re: John Deere la power plant
It's actually called a "LU" or "LUC"
Deere used these on a lot of hay balers and small pull-type (12A) combines.
My memory is fuzzy, but I think some of them were built by the Hercules Motor Company of Canton, Ohio. They look almost identical.
I think the Herc built engines were 3.25" bore x4" stroke = 66.3ci, while the Deere made engine is 3.5" bore x4" stroke = 77ci

Re: John Deere la power plant
I have no idea as to the value of the power unit.
I did a short internet search and found one engine for sale for $500-. My conclusion is that there is more value in good parts than the complete unit.
My opinion. Suggest to neighbor that he advertise the power unit on the local craigslist. Conduct a web search first to obtain a general idea of the unit's value.

I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: John Deere la power plant
As cool as power units are... they never sell for a good price.
Once in a while you'll see one "re-purposed" off of a baler onto a buzz saw, or made into a generator or something. But it is not as common as us "lovers of old iron" would like to see.
I have my eye on a Model U2 (Farmall "A" engine) power unit that was used for an irrigation pump. Not sure what I'd do with it, LOL! I just want to have it because it is unique and I don't want to see it get scrapped.

Re: John Deere la power plant
If it is one of the later ones it might be a 2 cylinder upright in which case it would be worth $12 to 1500 bucks.
