Diamond in the rough, VERY ROUGH!

Postby John *.?-!.* cub owner » Wed Jul 27, 2005 6:35 pm

Drug it home today, literally. One rear wheel wouldn't turn and I had to drag it onto the trailer. It is a Gibson Model D, as evidenced by the adjustable rear wheels (24 inch). Grandpa has owned it for as long as I can remember, but it hasn't been run in 20 years or more, and has spent it's whole life outside. I spent several hours on it when I was in my early teens grading road and plowing garden for him. Also rebuilt the transmission for him once. Since it was my Grandpas I'd like to fix it up, but it may not be reasonablebetween my health and it's condition. All 4 wheels are useless, one rear axle is locked up (may be brakes, but these have a history of axles seizing in housing), I doubt the engine is salvageable. Don't know condition of transmission. On the other hand, there are a lot of highly prized parts there, chain guard, front blade, plow, front and rear lifts, cast seat, etc.

Looks like a great project. Just move the wife's car out of the garage and put the Gibson in.

Hi john, there is a possibility that you may have to replace at least one front tyre :D
As you say a long term but worthwile project, what year would it be, it's even RED, so can't be too bad!
Best wishes
Pat

Pat, you are probably right about the tire, but I do still have the tread for it. It came off in one piece, wonder if I could glue it back on. LOL

thye don't have a serial number, but would be sometime in the late 40s to early 50s

John, buy a huge tank, fill it with diesel fuel (many gallons$$$$$) and put the Gibson in there! at least you won't hurt it any worse! Then when the 48 is done, the gibson will be as free as brand new.

Gibson is setting in the shed, getting a shot of Kroil everytime I go by. Thanks to jack o donovan, (or supplying motor), and videodoc, and billyandmillie (for transporting) I have a motor to use if mine isn't salvageable. The rear wheel that was stuck broke free while I was pushing it inot shed with the cub, turned out to be a rusted up bearing. Will take a while, but it looks like it will live again.

if anyone is interested, here is a current link to history of Gibson tractors.

Hey John...Those little tiller steer garden tractors are NEAT! I would like to find a Shaw-Do-All some day just to putter around with. Working on your Granpa's Gibson will be a worthwhile restoration indeed!

John
There is a man in western KY, little south of Paducah, that has about the largest collection of Gibsons around - at least one restored example of each model they built, and no telling how many more, that can tell you anything about them you want to know. His name is Harold Sherron (sp), and although he is getting up in age, still displays at shows in that area and usually at the Tri-State show in Portland, IN., usually with a Gibson model Super D, H, and I. He had some Gibson pedal tractors made a couple of years ago.
