tribute to my 55 jeep willys tractor.

Postby BigBill » Sun Nov 16, 2014 12:39 am

It sits all summer from the last spring snow storm till November. She fires up every November and never fails or complains about it. What a dependable mmachine she really is. It's the best thing I ever built. I just can't get over how many months she sits idle yet starts right up ready for work.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Sounds like a good rig. I would like to see some pictures.

I pulled BigBill's photos from yesterday's tractors. Apparently this is from before the cub wheel swap.

I'd like to get a true Jeep tractor some day. Here are a couple that show up at some of the local shows now and then.

She's not done yet I fabricated a mini rock body for the rear that will dump hydraulically. Plus I have the adapters to put four 8,3x24 ags on it using four fcub rim centers. I just need four tires, tubes and cub wheels.
Then I can put four of my duo cross chains on her too. She's my go to machine when all else fails. It's been on the back burner for years.

I'd love to build another one from a Chevy k20 4x4 drive train with a 454. But the one ton driving axle is much heavier.

I love the older equipment. Cubs, my 154's my jeep tractor anything older with ignition points.

I been thinking about removing the rest of the jeep nose and replace it with the farmall A tins.

Being back here again has me back to my plan of getting a super A, a "H" and possibly an "m" someday. I love old iron.

I purchased my 55 jeep when I went looking for a snowblower. With the 4 way plow I couldn't pass it up for $400. She's been with me about 20+=years now maybe more.

After the war was over Willis jeep looked at farming. They offered many farming attachments for the jeep.
I guess it never took off. But the older 134/134F are very dependable engines with a good drive train. If they only offered it with a tractor style tins.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

I have four extra 13.6x16 154 turf tires on rims. They would fit my jeep too. I could fab a set of skidded chains like the Swedish ones. The only down fall is the snow plow needs to be made wider. The 8.3x24 ags would be better then I can use the fcub rim centers and wheel weights too. I need a four speed tranny with the granny gear and power steering too.

The problem is my jeep tractor needs more height. It's too low for deep snow. As you can see in the pics my front bumper fabrication came out awesome. Give me a torch, a grinder and a welder I can turn an idea into reality.

For the ones who don't know I boxed the frame with 3/8" plate. The plow supports are 3" x 4" x 3/8" angle.
The plow frame runs from the front to near the rear tires. Both differentials have 5:38:1 gear ratio and loc rite units installed. These allow both axles to drive like a solid live axle. When you make a turn the faster turning axle will unlock. Make the turn then lock back up unless your heavy on the gas it will remain locked in and stay pulling. All four wheels are pulling at the same time. She's a beast.
The rear section under the dump body the frame is tripple wallet using 3/8" plate. This along with the dump body should balance out the weight up front somewhat. Then the fcub wheel weights should take snow plowing to a whole new level with the 8.3 ags and my duo cross tire chains.
