I have a 12 volt hydraulic power pack, from an old dump trailer. I'm using it to extend a small cylinder. I believe it's a .625 rod, maybe 1" bore, (don't have access to it right now) but the problem I have is the cylinder extends way too fast for what I'm doing. I was thinking of putting one of these in-line with the "out" from the pump but not sure if it's the right thing to do:

I like the idea of it restricting the flow in only one direction, because the return (by gravity) is about the right speed as it is now.

Re: Hydraulics question
Bob, can you give more info on what you're lifting? One thing first off is if you install the flow valve in the pressure line to the cylinder, one of two things might happen, or both. If you only have one line going to the cylinder and you restrict it with a flow valve, it may squeal the relief valve in the power pack pump to achieve the speed you want. Also remember when you restrict the flow to raise the cylinder, it will also restrict the flow when reversed, which may take forever to retract.

Re: Hydraulics question
Thanks, Rick.
Well it's a small dump body, about 4' long by 3' wide.
That's what I was thinking too, if I restrict the flow, the relief valve would squeal.
As far as the return goes, the description of this particular product says "flow control and full shutoff in one flow direction, unrestricted flow in opposite direction."
Should I just try to find a smaller pump? Maybe give up on the "power pack" idea and run a small pump directly off the engine and keep the rpm's as low as possible.

Mostly because I try to use what I've got before I spend money! But I might buy a small pump because I can turn it slower.

Re: Hydraulics question
I truly understand! LOL! BUT sometimes ya just cant cut corners!---A real small pump is not super costly!---the BIG guys are EXTREEEEMLY costly!
Also forgot to mention that I dont think you can restrict the flow on the electric units without damaging them! ---might want to check that out for sure before you put re-stricter on them! thanks; sonny

Re: Hydraulics question
I bought the item in the first post from Northern and it works great. Makes the speed adjustable, can adjust from slow to fast. And it has no effect on the gravity return, works just one-way. Perfect !

Re: Hydraulics question
Gotta love it Bob! Glad that worked for you and a tidbit to store in the memory banks. The restrictors are usually for the other way, to slow things when going down on a single action cylinder, which is what most electric pumps are hooked up to. FWIW I think those pumps have flow a control mechanism built into them, it could be for the return rate, not sure right now, I know Meyers Plow pumps do. My son and I used an electric pump for a dump bed on his pickup truck and plumbed it into a control valve (spool) which operated a double action cylinder, it worked great. The only thing was we have to run the pump and operate the control valve at the same time. We fab'ed up the lift mechanism as well out of 2" heavy wall square tubing. It was a fun project and we used stuff I had collected over the years so it was a low budget project as well.

Thanks for all the help. I'll be finishing this project soon and will post a youtube video. Hydraulics work perfect with that item from Northern.
