Hedger -- it is used to trim large trees in an orchard or grove. Here is a page that should make it reasonably clear:

A Brush Hog will cut your time even more.

I used to work in the maintenance department at our local hospital. There was a concrete bordered grass median about 5 feet wide between the in and out going lanes of the drive, and some of the staff decided it would look nice to have some small shrubs in that grass median. This was before the days of weed wackers, power hedge trimmers, etc. and due to the space the only way to mow around them was to hold the push mower on 2 wheels going on each side, plus the grass around them had to be trimmed with clippers, in addition to them being a favorite place for a lot of slobs driving on or out to throw their trash. Needless to say, we on the maintenance crew did NOT like them. The 2nd winter I was there we had such a big snow that the little cub with no weights or chains could not handle it, and the county brought one of their trucks in to move snow. Trying to get all the snow moved they also took out all the pretty bushes in the median with the snow plow. everybody said they would come back, but they never recovered. It may have had something to do with that Woods 59 running over the spot where they were.

Seen electric power company use one mounted on a large high lift type machine to trim trees around power lines. Not sure what the State and county use, but from the appearance of trimmed trees along the right of way, something similar.

Here is a pretty good picture of a hedger in use on citrus. As far as I know, the practice started with citrus fruit although now it is used with all sorts of tree crops. In this picture, what is being done is actually called topping. Hedging is when you trim off the sides. They are often done together but some times growers may choose to only do one or the other.

Don't know if they still use one, but local county highway department used to have a flail mower mounted on an arm to cut along roadways. Could start at the top and take a tree all the way to the ground. sure looked awful afterward though.

I've seen railroads clear the right of way with what looks like looks a huge bush hog on a hydraulic arm that can move any which way. Don't be near it when they're working with it!

I saw a video on youtube where the power company used a saw assembly simular to that one to trim the right of way on transmission lines. It was suspended from a helocopter and trimed the limbs off the trees. It was used in the mountains where access by normal means was restricted.

I have seen one of those helicopter rigs parked at a local motel overnight while they were trimming south of here. I wanted to get a closer look at it, but figured they did not appreciate people being around it.

There's a power line South of my house, a month or so ago I saw a copter flying along the line with something hanging from it. It wasn't close enough to tell right away what it was but I found out later that it was one of these rigs. Pretty Neat!
