readjusting points

Hi all, I've been using my john deere 55 combine and about every 25 to 30 hours I have to readjust the points. It won't mess up when it is already running but when I shut it off and try to restart it won't . It's happened probably 6 or 7 times in past 2 years when I'm getting ready to head to the field between days of harvesting. Just happened again today, getting things ready for corn harvest. I've tried everything I can think of . Looking for any helpful suggestions. Thank you
Rich

Hi Rich, did you lube the cam and points block?, if not the block wears down closing the points

Is the point gap closing up? Check for rough areas on the distributor cam.

Is the point gap remaining the same, but need to retime the distributor? There is a pin holding the gear to the shaft on the bottom of the distributor. Check to see if the pin has been sheared.

I'll check to see if the points are wearing out like you suggested Tim thanks for the reply. Eugene the gap is closing , all I need to do is regap the points once the engine stops starting and then it fires right up. Thank you for the suggestion. Do you think it could be the points? Been buying from carquest maybe wrong for the application since its heavier use on a combine?

I would try Echlin points from NAPA or another auto parts store.

I would check the distributor cam lobes for roughness. Lub the cam lobe when installing new points.

If cam lobes ok, and different points manufacturer and lubing the cam lobe doesn't work - there are fairly inexpensive ignition kits that eliminate the points. J.C. Whitney use to sell them.

Thanks for the replies, I'm going to change the points and check the cam. If the new Napa points don't work I'll look into getting rid of the points system. Thanks again Rich
