Got the Gravely runnin!

Postby tmays » Sun Aug 18, 2013 6:49 pm

I've been wanting a Gravely. One popped up on CL for $75 locally. I thought its probably junk but thought what the heck I've got nothing to lose. Looked pretty decent, engine not locked up. Had compression, so I bought it. Cleaned the points up, set the timing(that took a few tries!), and she fired up! Now I've got to find some attachments!

Gravelys are great machines. Fortunately most of the mowing I did with mine is done with Cub now. You will find impliments, shop for the whole machine is probably the best way to find stuff.

I have 3 currently. Useful in many ways but strangley designed in other ways. I assume this has a govenor but if not it is a very useful add on. Be careful with the timing of the mag on an electric start. A kickback can damage the 3 piece crankshaft. Also you may want to put a piece of tape over the pto opening to keep dirt out of the oil.

These things are great for mowing because of the quick forward and reverse. I use mine to jab under bushes and then pull out again.

Gravely changed the style of pto attaching and is something to be watchful for when looking for implements. The new style will require an adapter to fit the old style which looks to be what you have.

Landreo thanks for the advice. Mine is electric start and I sure didn't know that about the timing and the crank. I hope I didn't mess anything up. I didn't do it blindly however. I brought the cylinder to TDC on compression. Then backed the cylinder down 5/16". Then I set the timing being careful not to let the shaft turn. I made a few minor adjustments with it(just a hair at a time) until it ran.
I keep it covered. I removed cover just for the short time it ran. I hope to get a tiller and a mower attachment for it. I'd like to use the mower for cutting shooting lanes and food plot area in summer. Thanks!
