WinPower 6KW PTO Generator

Postby Matt Kirsch » Wed Jul 10, 2013 10:15 am

Last fall I picked up an old WinPower 6KW PTO generator cheap.

It doesn't work.

The one diode rectifier I could identify disintegrated in my hands, so I replaced it with a new one from Radio Shack.

It still doesn't work.

There is supposed to be another larger rectifier somewhere in the generator, but I cannot find any signs of it.

All the wires in the generator are white, and disappear into the bowels of the generator, so I can't trace anything out.

Any experts out there?

It appears to be the "Winpower 10/6 PT2" model.

By the serial number I found that it was manufactured in 1966. That I do remember.

I've got the wiring diagram, but it does me no good because all I can see is a bundle of white wires that appear from behind a casting, loop around, and disappear behind the same casting. I can't tell where any of them come from or where they go to.

The casting has all the brushes and the rear bearing for the armature. I really don't want to remove it, even if I could... The bundle of wires prevents me from removing the casting as far as I can tell!!!

I have to disconnect the wires in order to see where they come from and go to, but I can't see where they come from and go to to disconnect them!

Matt:

I think this page would be very useful - Winco - keep scrolling down. Owner's/Operator's Manuals, Parts and Wiring Diagrams, Troubleshooting. The wiring is pretty cool, not only a schematic but the whole parts breakdown.

Hope this helps.

I have several winco generators but not this model. If the wiring diagram is correct then there are 8 diodes, a fuse, and a circuit breaker. I would check all of those. Should be two diodes each on 2 heat sinks on each side of the rear bearing along with a smaller set of diodes on the left of the rear bearings. If you get no 120 or 240 then look at the fuse, breaker, and likely the larger series field diodes. It is unlikely that the windings are bad. With a bad shunt diode(s) you shoud still get some output.

The diodes appear to be the bolt on kind (TO3?) and the case is one of the actual terminals.

The shunt diodes were SHOT. They fell apart when I touched them.

The case says Winpower 10/6 PT2, but I can't find the field diodes even with the parts diagram! I can't find the brackets where they're supposedly mounted.

How many slip rings? 3 or 4?
