Allis-Chalmers Plow Colter - Stuck Bolt Trick

We purchased some used colters for our used plow. We had two bolts seized into the the swivel housing. Heat, Oil, Kano Kroil - let it set for a couple of days tried it again, still nothing. I tried something new I wanted to share.

We heated the casting and while contiuing to heat the casting I used the impact wrench (1/2" Drive Craftsman Professinal) to keep vibrating it. Slowly the hardened rust from inside the casting start started to fall-out. It slowly started to turn a 16th of a turn and then more and more. After about 3-4 minutes, it was spinning freely and just fell out of the casting.

You may have tried this but it was my first time - wanted to share.

The colter is now, free, never seized and reassembled.

I have used that method in the past. One thing to remember though, if you do more then a couple ( depending on how much heat is used ) you will be needing a new socket. Usually they just crack, but I've seen them break apart also. So be careful.

Thanks for that head's up. In this case the casting was large, the socket never got hot enough so it could not be touched. Craftsman, would do a double take and give me a new one

I'm glad to know others have used that....We've got another colter to rebuild so, we'll get a chance to try it again.
