I believe it was known as the Fordson Snow devil or a Snow Motor. I am not sure why it was a flop, but I do know that there have been some modern versions of it including military prototypes and I believe Kaiser Willy also had one. I would think that if they didn't have some sort of severe limitation they would still be around instead of tracked snow cats. My assumption would be that is soft snow they probably dig in if put under a load and I imagine that they would not be able to operate on any sort of side slope very well.

I would think the market would have been quite limited for this. Tracks is what got favored and yes probably for a reason, if nothing more than cost or the fact that tracks were already in use. I remember a personel carrier the army called a polecat being used in Greenland circa 1960. We were told they were used at ski resorts in places like Colorado. (Bob?). Tracks however can be buried. I have seen a Cat D-9 with the return track level with the snow. This was a modified D-9 with tracks five feet wide.

I have seen still pictures of this before but loved the motion. Nice post. Vern

I would think that a rock just beneath the surface would make life interesting.
