Planning a project that will require a hoist-- some call it a "cherry picker" but I have no idea why. This will be on a dirt/gravel surface. Anyone ever used a sheet of plywood as a floor for the hoist? It will need to be moved a couple of feet with a load of 600-700 pounds suspended on the hoist. Have you actually done this? Did it work well?

Yes, some call it an engine hoist.

Are we talking about an engine hoist?

It will work but with that much load you may have problems with the wheels sinking into it some, but should not be a big problem. Before I got my loader I had a small trailer I used to chain my hoist down on and move stuff around with it. I used one chain around the trailer and hoist, and a second one from the top handle back to the tongue and used it with the front legs folded so I could reach farther than the trailer.

Tried it once with a thick sheet of plywood. Worked ok until one of the wheels on the engine hoist/cherry picker dropped off the edge of the plywood. Basically the plywood worked better than nothing.
