340 U Torque Amplifier

Postby Paul_NJ » Thu Oct 28, 2004 10:20 pm

Just bought a 340 U. Everything (except brakes and starter) seems to work pretty well, with the exception of the TA, which doesn't do anything. I've been told it could be broken (bad news) or need adjustment (good news). Can anyone suggest any troubleshooting techniques for TAs to get me started to figure out what might be the problem?

This thing sure ain't like my 51 Cub

Thanks

Paul,

You might try going to http://www.atis.net and posting your question on the Farmall IHC discussion website. I have a working TA on my 350 U. Never had a problem with it so I've never attempted to troubleshoot it.

Good Luck!

Chris

Complete rebuilt TA units are available at what I would consider pretty reasonable prices.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

What is a TA and what does it do? Where does it mount?
thank YOU

Bill TA stands for torque amplifier. It was IH's system for a high / low range transmission. It is incorporated into the drivetrain. If you were pulling a heavy load and started to lug down, you could pull back on the TA lever and it was like downshifting into a slower gear without clutching. Pushing forward on the lever would shift you back up into high range.

Paul,

Trust me, you'll love it just as much. I'm not sure what the difference is between a 340 U and a 350 U. Mine is a 1957 with power steering, IH Fasthitch, traction control, and Torque Ampilifer. It also is equipped with a "hydraulic manifold" and three controls (one for the rear hitch, two remotes in rear and/or two for front or mid mount) for different implements and a three point conversion kit which attaches very easily.
I'll try to look in my manuals about trouble shooting the TA and send along any pointers I may find. I do know you NEVER want to freewheel or coast with the TA engauged.

Thanks BD. It sounds like the clicker on the side of the shift on an old brockway with a 2 speed rear. Amazing how every thing that is different is the same I had an echo cardiogram today and asked the girl to turn the screen so that I could see it. Dammed if I wasn't telling her what was happening. When i saw a dotted white line across her image I said Oh you are taking a section at that point. Just like Mechanical drawing 101.
