Chain Saw Help

Postby junkman1946 » Sat Jun 13, 2009 7:23 pm

I just aquired a MacCoulach Model 35 Saw Its looks quite old, Maybe late fifties -early sixties, it has about a 22 in. bar with 3/8 pitch chain. I'm looking for the gas/oil mix ratio? Anybody got any info? Thanks Frank

I do believe those were 35:1... but I'll ask around to some people around town. But i do believe those bigger mccullochs had that ratio. My small mcculloch uses that.

If it was that old I would guess maybe a 16:1 if not lower.

Your in the right time frame for the MC50. It's listed in a 1962 small engine book.

You fuel/oil mixture. "Use one part SAE 40 wt non detergent oil (or 40 wt outboard engine oil or McCulloch chain saw oil) with 20 parts regular gasoline. ( 1/2 pint oil to 1 1/4 gallon gasoline.)

Takes standard gear lub in transmission. Chain oiler tank - any 20 to 50 wt oil.

I used to have one of them years ago. I'm pretty sure it was 16:1.

Could very well be 16:1. 40 wt oil cited in my referece makes 20:1.

I just went to the basement and checked two different brands of 2 cycle oil. One container holds 2.6 fl.oz and mixes with one gallon gaoline for a 50:1 ratio. Second container's chart says to use 3 fl.oz to a gallon for a 50:1 ratio.

Why, I don't know. I just use the quantity recommended on the side of the oil container.

Thanks Guys: 16/1 ought to do it. I have some of that new 2 cycle mix that claims 100/1 mix ratio for ANY 2 cycle engine. I just don't trust it in this old stuff. Technology is great: But I'm old and sometimes did things the old way, But I'm still here.

I have the owners manual and illustrated parts list for the mac 35a that I got from John this spring. If you need/ want a copy of them. I can get them to you just not soon as I am so busy at work I do not have any spare time until fall. I am taking off work at noon next week to go to Cubfest OH at Rick's. If somone can copy them there I can bring them with me.

Thanks Cowboy: I will advise. This was picked from a junk pile with the expectattion it may work. My SIL buys his firewood "tree length" and needs a Heavy duty saw to cut the pile. If it doesn't show signs of running in the next couple days, its going right back in the junkpile. I certainly have No love affair for old chain saws.

We ran optimol 100 to 1 mix in our chainsaws at the fair in the chainsaw contests with high octane gas. (newer husqvarna's) I normally run 50 to 1 husky mix.

I would think that older saw would use 1 pint to 1 gallon of gas.

I was told not to mix that much two stroke with this new blend of gas it only lasts about 30 days mixed for two strokes. I only mix 1 1/2 gallons now. Years ago my saws would sit all summer filled with gas from the previous winter. They all ran great after there long summers sleep. Now i'm not sure how to store them till the next cutting season. I'm not sure about this new blend of gas were using.

My uncle had an older mac saw that was direct drive. It took us forever to start it but once it was running it cut like a bear. It was hard to start because he used it once a year if that. I have a little mini eager beaver mac with a 9" bar to carry on my quad off road. We used it to clear trails. The loggers on the westcoast found out i had this saw with the 9" bar and asked me if i wanted to cut the giant redwoods with them. Just Kidding       But it is a neat little chainsaw. I grabbed a few more just to have the parts at the flea markets.

If your looking for a newer chainsaw look at your local pawn shops. I just picked up another husqvarna that looks like new for $250 at my local pawnshop. Its around $800 new.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Problem solved; Saw is on its way to Maine. Recoil start was screwed up, so I took a 3/8 grade 8 bolt attached it to what was left of the recoil dogs. Drilled a hole in the case for the head of the bolt to stick thru. 9/16 socket, 18 volt cordless drill = electric start. Works like a champ.

I run my small 2 and 4 cycle engine powered equipment out of fuel before storing them. Basic idea is to empty the carburetor of fuel or fuel oil mix.

Works with a drill, but don't try doing that with an impact. Don't ask.

Absolutely; Variable speed cordless drill. Turn it slow. Impact wrench will snap the crankshaft nut. As to the gas situation; I keep 2 gals. in the heated shop for odds and ends. I just wanted to mix enough 16/1 ratio to fill this saw once. So I measured out 1/2 gal. into aclear Pyrex measuring cup. I walked away for a second to get the oil, when I returned I noticed 4 oz. of water and contaminants had settled out of this so-called gas. This gas was pumped into the CLEAN metal can not three weeks ago. It never went outside the garage . I siphoned off the gas and yes, it was water, I gave it the taste test.
