Art, the 444 was made from 70-78. They are a British made tractor, the diesels had a BD-154 engine, the gassers in the US were shipped in as crates, and had a C153 American engine installed.
We've used many of the 444 and that series tractor. We like them a LOT!! (Have 2 of them right now) They were the best made tractor of their size on the market in their day, they'll out-pull, out-work, and out-last any MF 35 or Ford 3000 ever built. (IMHO) :D

New parts are still availlable through the dealer network, and through after-market sources. We have also parted out somewhere around 40-50 of that series if you ever want used parts.

the guy wanted $3800 us for it, which i thought was a lot. tractor and 3 point only, gasser, decent shape, 50 % tires.
anyway i called last night, he said he sold it.
i'll keep looking, thanks for the info, though. how many HP was that c153 engine?

Art, I'm not sure what the 153 was rated at, but in Canada the 444 was rated at 38.4 HP, gas or diesel.

Art, just thought I'd post a couple of pics of what one of those tractors can do. These are from us working in the woods just the other day. We are trying to clean up a nasty spot down over a steep hill.
Image

Notice the trees in the back ground,, that'll give you an idea how steep the hill is.

We only take a small twitch of wood up over the hill, but still not bad for 38HP.
Image

Likely 1/3 to 1/2 cord of wood hooked up there.

i was already sorry i missed the tractor. but i hesitated at the $3800 price tag, not knowing if it was reasonable or not.
i will find one, though.

Around here, a 444 goes around $4500-$6000 CDN, depending on condition, with a loader about$6000-$8000.

I have a late 60's industrial version of the 444 with the BD154 diesel engine. I have been very happy with this little tractor.

Shown here is my IH2444.

I don't know what number is on the side of your IH but it does not look like 444 and my 444 don't look like your picture.

Jim, the tractor in the picture is a 384, the next version of a 444. Both have the same BD 154 engine, and identical drive lines through out. We have 1 of each, and they perform the same.
