Heater question

Postby Pony Master » Tue Nov 18, 2008 12:08 pm

I have 2 torpedo style heaters in my shed. One is a new red one that says that it is able to burn Kero., Jet fuel, fuel oil and diesel. The other one is not but a few years old, but says it is just for kerosene. What will happen if I put diesel in it? I have known a lot of people who do it all the time, but what damage am I risking.

In my past experience, burn only kerosene. It is cleaner. I burned diesel in one once and the air was too thick to breathe. It was nasty. Also, do not burn jet fuel as it may sometines contain an anti icing additive that is a known carcinogen. Not that breathing straight exhaust is good either. But I would recommend only staright un dyed kerosene. Now, if you are not going to be working around it and are using it for a pre heater or somthing, burn whatever is available.

At over 5 bucks a gallon, I don't think you'll be burning Jet A.

I have a very old Sears heater, that I tried diesel in several years ago. The results were so much smoke and smell it was only usable outdoors, so I have been burning kerosene only it it for the last few years. I needed to use it last week, but no one has any kerosene in stock yet this year, so I tried some of the low sulfur diesel. worked great, hardly able to tell the difference in burning kerosene over low sulfur diesel.

i guess we learn something new everyday, i was under the impression you could burn anything also. i'm going to try the kero and see if it will clean up the fumes. i have a rather large older john deere 150,000 btu bullet that throws a lot of heat but could be rather rough on the breathing.

I have 2 REDDY heaters,--110,000 and a 55,000 that are about 15 or so years old and have been used a lot in past winters running ONLY pure, water clear K-1 and have not had any burner problems with them!!---the insides of the heaters look brand new,--NO soot/residue of any kind!!---I have never used any of the other" might burn fuels in them", so I do not have an answer to the original question, but would say to use only K-1!!!! Smoke and fumes are bearable with kero, and as an example,--- hold your face over a Diesel tractor muffler for a couple seconds and I would imagine that would be what your heater would be like in the shed! thanks; sonny
