Why is it when you put chevron tread on a non driving wheel, you mount it backwards ?

Ag treads or chevron style treads are designed to force the mud out away from the tire to keep the tire from filling up with mud between the treads and reducing traction. That's why driving wheels point forward on the top and driven wheels face backwards. Think about how the forces are applied to each type and it makes sense.

BD:

Thanks for the explanation. Never thought about it that way, but remembering how Elllie was set up, it certainly makes a ton of sense..

Rudi,
I have seen many tractors with one tire backwards , i guess so it has traction in reverse but wouldnt you have to brake the other tire ?
