8n flywheel?

Postby BOB K. » Mon Feb 19, 2007 9:35 pm

A friend of mine bought a 1953 ford 8n with a loader. It had a worn spot on the flywheel so it won't start all the time. My question is how much work is involved in getting to the flywheel? I never seen a 8n. He wants me to put a new flywheel and cluch setup in it for him. Before he brings it 1 1/2 hours to me I want to know what to expect. Thanks

You have to split the tractor. The loader will probally have to come off. A days work for two mechanics in a well equiped shop.
Best,
Mike

The split and fywheel change are pretty sraightforward. 6 or 8 bolts at the front of the tranny. Proper blocking and its apart, no real surprises. The BIG problem is getting the loader out of the way. UNless you have a first class shop with plenty of lifting and jacking equipment. I would remove the loader completely first. LOL.

Thanks guy that what I was hoping not to do removing the loader. I have done several splits of the Cub but never seen a 8n up close to see how they split. I will have to wait til he brings me the 8n or have him take some pics for me first. Thanks again. Bob k.

Bob K I assume your friend is telling you its a 53 8n. Ford stopped making the n series in52 A 53 tractor would be an NAA series(jubilee) they are 6 inches longer than the n series and have an Oherhead valve motor. I have never split an NAA, so I cant verify the info in my previous post.

I can't remember for sure, does a Jubilee have live hydraulics? If so, doesn't the hydraulic connection from the pump to the rear end add a bit of complication? I've never been involved with splitting one of them.

I know for sure its a 7n, I had found it for him a few years back. I can remember the year It is no older then a 50. I get confused with the other early 50 tractors I have lol. He told me 53 off the top of his head but it is a 8n.
