Ford 2N Carb question TSX Carb Marvel-Schebler Hole in botto

Postby TOOLMAN » Sat Nov 18, 2006 8:00 pm

Hello again
1947 2N Carb question I just rebuilt my carb and while doing so I noticed what appears to be a jet hole of some type in the center of carb not to far away from the drain plug, This hole was clogged with debris that I was able to poke right through with wire and carb cleaner to loosen the crap up.
It appears to be a center hole of some type directly below the air uptake housing that goes all the way through the carbs bottom and into housing.
Question: Should there be some kind of plug in this hole?
Is it a jet that allows air into the bowl for air mixture?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thank You Tony
The carb is I believe a TSX Carb Marvel-Schebler economizer

It's been a long time since I was inside a 9N carburetor, but from the description it sounds like the drain for excess fuel. The Cub has a similar one. It's purpose is to drain if the engine is over-choked but limit entry of outside air. It is supposed to have porous material in it.

Tony, George nailed it. That hole is actually a "weep" hole when the casting is made. Not sure what material should be in there, but I'd bet you caould easily mix up some JB Weld and plug, just be sure to keep the excess to a minimum on the inside.

Mike and Tony,

JB Weld would defeat the purpose of the hole. It is there to act as a drain and must be porous. Similar drains in other carburetors may have sintered metal plugs or felt to limit entry of significant air and still allow liquids to leave.

I was informed by a member of a Ford N group that it is what you say George and in early years it was Felt that was used to seal the hole
Thanks
