Security System for Remote Buildings

Postby Eugene » Sun Jun 11, 2006 9:49 pm

Just suffered a breakin at the farm shop. Building is not hooked to the power company.

I've just drawn up a security system based on 12 volt auto parts. Basically the system works as follows. N/O (normally open) switch on the main point of entry - this is the switch the thief would close by opening the door. N/C on/off switch - probably key operated - used to turn off the system by the owner. 12 volt starter relay activated by the N/O switch and series wired with the N/C on/off switch.

12 volt auto horn and 12 volt headlight bults activated by the relay. Power supply. 12 volt vehicle batteries.

Also planning on putting several solar powered motion detectors to turn on spot lights.

Comments, thoughts appreciated.

One thing you might od is replace starter relay with headlight relay. I've doen similar things using starter relay, and the relay burned up before the battery ran dwon.

John:

I've ordered a catalog of video VCR security systems. I spent some time searchng for inexpensive 12 volt VCR systems. I haven't found one yet. If anyone knows where to obtain one. Please post.

Maybe a small draw 110 volt converter would work for a 110-volt VCR & Camera. I have a camera in my pump house pointing at my front door that can be set up with a VCR. It has been on continuously since yr/2000.

I am assuming that was a joke, because in relaity it will get you jail time in MO.

Eugene, go to http://www.heartlandamerica.com search ofr security or surveillance. another possibility is one of the game cameras. you can get them in models that you can disable flash. Not really a preventive, but a good itme for proof.

John: That is the catalog I requested. thanks.

I gave some dirty tricks, more than a few moments of thought. The loss was just short of $1000-. None of it insured. It's not worth a law suit and the potential resulting financial loss.

Another problem is that the building is quite remote. And, there is an easement across the property. About the only thing I can do is to put a gate across the entrance. But as deputy sheriff said, they would just take the gate.

Installed a cable across the drive with another no trespassing sign.

Purchasing, this afternoon, a game cam, infrared, no flash.

Another idea. Solar electric fence.

Consider a motion detecter to turn on a small radio to let someone know that something or someone has entered the building. Also a switch under a step actived by weight on the switch that sends message to main building.
