Gilbarco Compressor

Postby kinelbor » Sat May 20, 2006 3:17 pm

Sorry guys for the non-cub thread, but I figure this is one of the best places to get information :D I went to the city-wide yardsale today and found this beast. With a little pi R squared it works out to being around a 70gallon tank. I believe that the pump is a Quincy model 310. I think its a two-stage pump because one cylinder is much larger than the other. It came with a starter, the motor I have has a capaciter on it. Will I still want the starter? If anyone has any info on this pump or tips on getting the beast going that would be great! Thanks

PS. Think I got a good deal...$50 :D :D :D

YES
the starter is used for overload protection and switching the motor on and off. the capicator is needed to start the motor.
check the max amps on the motor and see if the overloads in the starter are right or need changed

There should be a pressure switch too, like the one on a well pump (except with a higher pressure on and off) the pressure switch operates the starter which starts and stops the motor.

Ok, it also came with a pressure switch, I have a brand new Furnas switch with unloader. This compressor doesnt have a check valve or unloader port. I have a 3HP motor, and the 3 inch pulley you sent me Rick :D With that motor and the 3 inch pulley, the pump will be spinning at about 700RPM. If this is a Quincy, then here is the data page for the pump http://www.mesaequipment.com/Html/Products/Quincy/qr25_basic.html The pump has a 310 stamp on the plate. So it should run with that setup.

Nik:

I think you got a good deal. I like to see older equipment restored, reused instead of recycled...

Keep us posted on how this all works out.. ... it looks like you will have a mighty fine compressor.

The pump may have a internal centrifugal unloader, that setup was common on some older compressor units. There will usually be a check valve in the line to the tank and when the compressor stops it will dump the pressure internaly. There will sometimes be a small 1/4" or similar line running from around the last stage to the crankcase, to a unloader valve mounted at the end of the crankshaft. If it doesn't have a internal unloader, all you will need to add your unloader is a checkvalve and a tee fitting. plumb the tee between the check valve and compressor, and plumb the check valve between the tee and tank. Then just simply hook the unloader to the tee.
