Johnny, spring tooth harrows are used to break up clods in plowed soil, much like a disk harrow does. They just accomplish the task in a slightly different manner.

BigDog is right on the money :!: :D  But spring tooth harrows and spike or peg tooth harrows also have another use.. one which may or not be commonly thought of.

Here we use them to both break up the clods of dirt and vegetation that can be missed by the disc harrow. While a disc harrow when used properly can negate the use of a tiller, sometimes clods do still remain. Also, disc harrows are not a great leveller... they cut it up pretty good, but are not able to fill valleys or take down a ridge.

However, spring and spike or peg tooth harrows can be quite useful in re-levelling a field. When you plow, you move the earth around, and after a bit of that, sometimes you get valleys and ridges that may or may not be corrected the next plowing. So the harrow is also used to level out those inequities in a field.

Now that a lot of farmers have tillers and such... re-levelling a field may not be so much of an issue, but for those of us who do not have 3 point tillers.. a spring tooth or peg tooth harrow comes in quite handy.

They are also useful in the place of a landscape rake.. and do a pretty decent job of levelling a pasture as well as loosening up the top inch or two for reseeding with grass.... spike or peg tooth harrows do this very well.
