IH C60 and Hercules ZXB3 manifold interchange

Postby staninlowerAL » Thu Feb 22, 2024 2:09 am

Is there any possibility that these two manifolds might interchange? I have a good manifold from a 154 and would like to try to use it on the Hercules engine rather than try to repair a hole in the Hercules manifold. Any thoughts or experiences? Any comments on repairing the cast manifold? Thanks. Stan

Any chance the Hercules manifold could be brazed to close the hole? Not sure if it's on the intake or exhaust portion....

I would think any chance of fittment would be very slim but give it a look, you’ve got nothing to lose.

The hole is about the size of a dime and on the exhaust side. Seems like brazing would be the best option but unfortunately that seems to be a lost skill in my part of the country. Thanks for the comments. I've looked at a JB Weld High Temperature epoxy paste (not a 2 part mix) that along with a patch might hold up for occasional use. Anyone have any experience with this product? Stan

J-B Weld HighHeat is a two-part epoxy system that provides strong, lasting, heat-resistant repairs up to 550°F. Won't hold up on exhaust side of a manifold.

Take the manifold to a welding shop.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Why don't you ask Buddy if there will be someone at the LA Cubfest that could braze it.

Well I took a closer look at the fitment and the studs spacing is not close enough to work. BTW here's a look at the gremlin, just to the rear and below the exhaust flange connection. A nickel coin would cover it. :(

Is the manifold thick enough that you could drill a round hole, tap it and screw in a plug?

I don't think so Bob. Still considering alternatives. Talked to an automotive machine shop today, they did not offer any suggestions. I plan to bring it to the Lucedale show in a couple weeks and get some feedback from the people that I know who will be there. Probably also bring it to LACubfest for some recommendations. Stan

I just clean them down to bare metal and braze patches over them. Gets kinda involved cause you have to preheat the whole casting quite a bit before you braze then remove heat slowly and you will be fine. A big 500,000 lp weed burner torch will give enough heat so no need for an oven or forge. --- Even a thin casting can be fixed this way making them last til another burn thru down the line.
I think some of these burn thru's are from sand trapped in the metal when they were cast back in the day causing a weak spot years down the road.
