Bought a John Deere L at auction

Postby cjet69 » Mon Nov 13, 2023 2:59 pm

The auction was 2 weeks ago, and Friday was the pick-up day. Had the winning bid on this 1940 John Deere L project tractor. About the only thing missing is the Carb. This has the Hercules NXB engine.

Pumped up the tires, turned the rear wheels around to narrow up the tread, and got it unloaded Saturday.

Yesterday I touched up the points in the mag and now have good spark. Pulled the plugs and looked in the cylinders. I think the PO must have had this opened up because it is really clean inside. Also found it has .020 oversized pistons when I ran the borescope into the cylinders.

Thank you and it will be very interesting to watch your progress with the project. Some of us have some green sprouting in the sheds!

It will probably be a while before I do much to this one but I may try to get a carb on the engine and see if its a runner.

Got the engine set back in the frame. Found some round rod and bent up a hand crank. Just need to drill for the cross pin. Going to try and start it soon.

Played around with the L some today. Need to check the valves because its not sucking thru the carb like it should when I crank it over.
