I plan to go out today with an inspection mirror and see if I can find some numbers on a couple of the big sprockets. Thanks.

Most tire shops won't go anywhere near those wheels.

Oooo...luckily the tires are holding air now. :|
With regard to the wheels, is it a safety issue or lack of familiarity

Is there a maintenance process to ensure the wheels are safe?
What goes wrong with them? I've never dealt with spoke wheels.

It's the locking ring/split ring that is the problem. When the repaired tire is inflated the locking rings sometimes detach. Causing serious injury to the operator.

The tire with the locking ring is placed in a cage before inflating. Most tire shops will not have the cage.

Family use to own a gas station. One tire with safety ring got my brother. That's when Dad had the cage built.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Got it!
Does it also tend to fail while in use?

Since I was so ignorant of split rims (even though I had heard of them), I Googled them and thought I would post one article I found for anyone else who was not familiar with them:

As Jim said...a bit scary!! :big angry: :big what:

Not usually. It's during inflation where the ring slips out of the rim.

This site has info on similar spreaders, maybe they might might be able to provide more details on this spreader

I must be lucky, I’ve fixed a lot of split ring tires in my 47 years of being a mechanic.

Yes, the key to successful mounting and inflating split ring wheels is that both components be clean, free of rust and in good condition. If the ring snaps in properly, you’re not likely to have a problem but if it doesn’t seat right, the wheel needs to go to the scrap bin. Actually, now days, they should all go to the scrap bin, anyway.

I agree, but you would be hard pressed to find a wheel to fit that spreader. You would have to cut the spokes and weld a modern wheel to it

Tires seem to be holding air. Use the tires until they they won't hold air. Then you might be able get them foam filled.
