my father -in-law and I went and purchased him an 8n. We need to rewire that though. Amp reads negative when running and lights don't work. It is a 12 volt system with a generator. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a 12 volt system with a generator and not an alternator? Are they the same wiring scheme? I ahve a 8n diagram for a 12 volt alternator system.

Dan, It just might be that whoever did the conversion did not reverse the leads on the ammeter. You could measure battery voltage with the tractor off and again running about half throttle. If the voltage is slightly higher when running, it is OK.
Lights are usually easy to trace out. I don't have an 8N wiring diagram but that portion of the wiring would not be different from the diagram you have for the alternator system.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.
