The ignition coil or ignition parts, if they are solid state, may be failing when they get hot enough. I have seen this before on some small engines.

Was it working and under load or just setting running? that could affect temperature of engine.
If you are not part of the solution,

There's no situation that preceeds the shutdown. Sometimes working/load, sometimes just running. Sometimes it won't start/run, sometimes it will. My next check is to adjust the valves.

Is this generator connected to a transfer switch?

Sounds like a loose or failing electrical wire. Either in the low-oil safety circuit or in the coil power supply line.

Recent update on my gen gremlin. Late Hurricane last week caused me to have to dig deeper into this problem. With the help from a nephew who is skilled with electronic/electrical controls, the start/stop/no start/shutdown gremlin was traced to the oil pressure switch which activates a relay that supplies 12v power to the engine run circuit. In my case the OP switch was working properly but the relay was intermittent, hence the on again/off again problem, ran it 6 days, 24/7 until utility power was restored today. Relay cost replacement looks to be in the $200 range. Glad to be finally making some progress. 240v 50A SO cord feeds directly into the 50A aux service connection on the right side of the power safety disconnect switch as the picture shows.
