a different tractor

Postby Jerry's cub » Wed Apr 04, 2018 7:28 pm

Any one at all familiar with the ford 2000 this particular one according to tractor data dot com based on serial number is either a 1973 or74. This one belonged to my uncle who is now deceased, myself and brother and two cousins are considering buying it from the estate to use on our families old farm for keeping fields mowed and some wood skidding. We also have an 8n but this 3 cylinder 2000 we know very little about, overall it is in pretty good shape, have not had it running because have not been able find the key so in next couple days going to hot wire it to get it running. So just looking for some history on this particular model or maybe someone knows a forum where one could gather info.

TBN, and MTF, have specific ford sections and large member count so you might try them.--I have seen a couple 2000's for sale around here but never could buy one, too rich for me!---thanks; sonny

My understanding is they are highly sought after; I presume size and power dictate that. They demand a fair price around these parts, as in the $3-$4K range, if in decent shape.

You can pick up an ignition switch at the auto parts store. Usually the new switch will come with 2 keys. It's less expensive to buy a new switch than have a lock smith make a new key.

Tag and label each wire as you remove them from the switch.

Next item is to see if Ford used only one key cut for their tractors. A lot of tractor manufacturers did. If you can find out which key/key cut you can most likely pick up one for a couple of dollars.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I have a Ford 3000 (slighter larger than a 2000) for over 25 years. One of the best tractors ever built in my opinion and others. I have a 3 cylinder gas version. 2000 and 3000 share a lot of the same parts. The same engine block was used for both gas and diesel versions.
The 2000 in my experience (with no real facts to back this up) was not equipped with some of the better features that the 3000 had. Things to check for is power steering. A quick glance at the tie rods to see an exposed hydraulic cylinder on each side of engine will indicate power steering or not. Lots of 2000 did not have a live pto. Impossible to tell unless tractor is running. The Holly gas carb. can be a problem until someone experienced with them can figure them out.
Mine now has a Petronix ignition which has a huge difference in both starting and running.
Good Luck with your 2000. Don't think you can go wrong.

Thank you for everyone's reply I will check those couple sites, just trying to find out if its one fords not so good ideas. Not sure on power steering or live pto or how it runs because we have not found the key to the building that it is in nor the key to the tractor. We are just see it through a very small window, we actually did not even know he had this tractor because we were never in that building or we would have already new more about it. Again thank you for everyone's input.

Yes I have checked out a couple of them, nice to get the opinion from someone with experience with the tractor. Thought I would also ask here as I trust and respect the input from the group here. Thank you Bernard for your input

Fords seem to have a good following but I'd rather have a JD 830 (not the two cylinder) or an IH 484 or similar. Fords were just a little too crude for my tastes. Just never been much on the blue Masseys......

The one I saw at auction here brought $ 1,700 and looked to have some major problems, overall it looked good, straight, excellent tires, BUT engine was very messy, so since this auction is consignment,--that meant basicly it was a parts tractor.---The other one was at a tractor show.--it had cab and snowplow on it!--Strange lookin' with a cab on them! LOL!!!
I have a 53 golden jube. has matching # (engine and rear end), came with a ford 701 loader and never gets used! ( I not ford tractor man!!---Ford trucks-- YES!!! ) ---thanks; sonny

Right now it sounds like the executor of my aunt and uncles estate may give us the tractor, because it seems he had just purchased the tractor just prior to his illness and he purchased it to be used on the farm that he willed to the 4 of us. So she said if that's where he wanted it to be that's where it should be, so with that being said we will give it a chance. We have roughly 50 acres of open field to keep mowed so it should do it easier and faster than our old 8N, if it does that without giving us a lot of trouble then the price was right.
