IH model 59P shredder

Postby radioguy41 » Thu Sep 03, 2020 9:07 pm

I picked up this really nice IH model 59P shredder today. You don't see these too often, especially in this kind of condition and man is it heavy! Only made for a few years in the 1970's it has a 5hp B&S engine. Unfortunately it sat for apparently many years and the inside of the gas tank is in bad shape. The original dealer sticker is still there in beautiful condition. They also made a model 59M that mounted on the front of a Cub Cadet. Imagine that puppy blocking your vision while driving your Cadet. It's interesting that the phone number doesn't include the area code. :)

take the gas tank, put some small sharp stone inside, wrap it up in an old blanket and tape it together and put it inside your dryer no heat, after an hour most times I find it looks new inside

Thanks Tim. Unfortunately the tank has about a 1/4" or more of gooey goop inside. I'm wondering if soaking it with acetone or alcohol might help.

Well, as it turns out the tank is shot. First, there are no threads to hold the cap on, they're all stuck inside the cap. Looks like someone twisted them off trying to remove the cap. It was stuck on when I bought it so I didn't notice it right away. The tank is actually over half full of the goop. When I removed the carb the goop didn't want to let go of the pickup tube. Looks like I'm going shopping for a tank (and probably a carb too).

Yesterday I picked up a virtual twin to my engine to use for parts.

It has a mild discrepancy with the block,

and no compression.

But the tank and carb are just fine. :)

What surprised me is there is no damage to the piston or the head, just a busted connecting rod and the hole in the block. Next up is to install the tank and carb on the shredder and see if it starts.

Little bit of an update. While it was running, it wasn't running right. After fussing with two different carbs I bit the bullet and ordered a new carb (part num matched to mine) thru Amazon. It didn't even come close to fitting so back it went. I then ordered one off of Ebay ($66). It came today, I popped it on, and it runs like a champ. I even test shredded some small branches. Works great now. Next week it gets it's first real test, my son and I are taking down all the hedges out front and shredding them.

Gave it it's first real workout today, likely the first in 30+ years. 1.5 solid hours of 7 foot hedges up to 1.25 inches in diameter. It performed great. Found an interesting way to move it around, there's a lip under the engine that fits right over the trailer hitch ball on the 4Runner (with the hatch open). Tied the handles down to the safety chain loops to prevent it lifting or rocking and towed it around the property to the stacks of cuttings. Heckuva lot easier than trying to manhandle that 165 lbs around manually.

Great job on repairing the shredder and removing the overgrown Junipers or Yews. Whas it able to shred the larger trunks of the bushes?
You probably already know this but IH also made a 59M shredder that mounted on the front of a Cub Cadet and ran off the pto.

About the largest it would shred without struggling or stopping was roughly an inch. MacKissic, the actual mfg, specs it at 1" capacity.
