It's always fun to play archaeologist at your own place! Great thread and video. When was the video shot?

Next years forecast now includes a shortage of blackberries.
That is quite an iron mine you have in your foliage!

I'm thinking the video was shot in the early to mid 80's.

Put a starter on it today and cranked it over several times and suddenly it locked up. I pulled the starter to see if that was is but it wasn't. I put a pry bar on the ring gear and it backed up and turned 180* and locked again. I figured I should pull the head and look to see if something got in one of the cylinders. All I found were carbon chucks mainly on #3 cylinder and the engine rotated freely without the head on. Must have loosened it up while cranking. I'll get the carbon cleaned up and get the head bolted back on. I suppose this would be a good time to make sure the valves are working and sealing properly.

With that much buildup, you might also want to remove a couple of valves and see what the valves and seats look like.

Got a break between rain showers so I went for startup. It teased me for a while with sputters and smoke and then a cough here and there. Finally it came to life and picked up all the cylinders. It was just a short run as there isn't coolant in it yet, but long enough to determine the carb needs some attention. I'll get the carb and coolant addressed and then maybe shoot a short video.

That engine runs better than some rebuilt tractors

Glad you dug it out and got it running, that's awesome!

Another short video after it was warmed up. The exhaust smoke cleared up.

Did a compression check today. They were 20, 45,40, and 60. After shooting oil in the cylinders they were 100, 80, 85, and 90. Its still tough to start and I think the low compression is the problem. I think it could use a re-ring and touch up the valves.

Watching the vi8deo of combining I was noticing the tread patter on the rear tractor tires. I haven't seen that pattern in a lot of years.

The first batch of pics showed a lot of cleaning and scraping to be done. Pic #5 shows a naked intake valve seat. It looks like an exhaust valve is in there. --but it is larger. Time for a new seat.

The video brought back some memories. Dad had an H (1939) and a 52R combine. His would have been an older combine since the engine was a Continental and the grain bin was round. The 52R had many types. PTO power and a bagger instead of a grain bin but I've never seen one with a bagger. Dad said nothing ever thrashed clover seed as clean as a 52R. Thanks for the post. :D Vern
