its a VW...tractor! ( no really )

Postby Indy4570 » Sat Feb 23, 2019 11:44 pm

I posted a pic in another thread but I decided some of you may enjoy having a detailed peek at the franken VW skidsteer death trap. I call it a death trap because it is, it has no gear reduction and no steering wheel, it steers hydraulically with a valve. it flows waaaayyyy too fast so it locks the steering one way or the other very quickly. The other issue is with rear steer and highway gearing even 1st gear is way to fast!! it is the sum of its parts that got me to buy it, mostly I wanted the engine for another project. but making it run has made it seem a shame to part out :P now the axles could be made inot so sort of gear reduction solving the speed issue and a reducing valve with some sort of tiller could solve the steering issue. But hey I dont know if I will ever get around to that. it has a 1600 CC dual port engine, a 3 rib bus transmission and a VW axle in the rear for steering. a fully working loader and a working dump bed.

its one of a kind, I do not think you will ever find another one like this. It has five hydraulic cylinders, valves, engine, bus trans, wheel adapters, so many parts is why i bought it, seized, but I got it running in an hour.

i think its a fun beast and who knows what kind of doodlebug I might make from the parts

It's an interesting piece of home engineering. Looks like something out of a Mad Max movie. I think you ought to dress up as a Mad Max character while operating it! :{_}:

Hmmm.... Too Fast, Sketchy Steering... What could go wrong? It is quite the creation (contraption) that has somehow come to be from mind to beast. This has to be the heaviest duty Loader-Gator I've ever seen! (Loader on the front, Gator Box on the back)

Somebody put a LOT of time and money making that thing! I would figure out a way to reduce the speed and make a real machine out of it! thanks; sonny

Looks similar to the military "mule" vehicles. They are cool and had some unique features.

I think you need the cooling tubes that go from the fan shroud down to the exhaust .. Not a VW expert but I think those tubes are important :-?

they are not actually cooling tubes, they provided heat by blowing air across the original heat exchangers on the VW cars n vans

Well? A roll bar is a good thing...
Reduced throttle range or a milder governor would not make me weep..
Reducing steering valve flow is next.
IF it has rear brakes ,there's some more steering.

Pulley guards (should they be built) need to be robust.
A trike I donated parts to took a slight bump from an elderly lady at a grocery store.
The owner only noticed a slight dent on a pulley guard and waved her off.
She had centered a pully's shaft , and drove it forward enough to be fatal....

I think it is more likely to be parted out for the sum of its pieces. someone said a dime placed in the fitting reduces flow, it was an old trick used by farmers back in the day. I thought a tiller arrangement on the side would improve steering. but it really needs a gear reduction of some sort to be useful at all. and I have a use for some of the parts so maybe one day it will be a donor for a few other projects. I think the dump bed will go on the Toro yardmaster. the engine and trans into a EMPI sportster from the 60s I have.
