1950 Ferguson TO20 Hupp HI/LO

Postby Indy4570 » Mon Dec 11, 2017 1:35 am

I picked this up this summer, I could not pass it up due to the Hupp Hi/LO. I bought it for parts but got it running before I took it off the trailer, need a gas tank for it but I use it with a small tank for now. the original tank was stolen I was told.

this is how it looked when I got it. one front rim was rusted and useless, the other not much better. The carb was in pieces as well as the starter. the iron bolted to the front axle was something made up to push round bales in the field. It had one on both sides at one time, I got both with the tractor.

as it looks now after a powerwash to remove the lichen growing on it and some lights moved, added a lil grey primer to slow down some rust till I find time to clean it up properly.

the tractor runs excellent, the Hupp HI/LO functions well and it has excellent oil pressure. I have to find a short that drains the battery other than that I use the tractor. I was able to fix the starter but the 48 starter remains in the 50 for now, the carb was rebuilt and works well. it has the fronts off the 48. I discovered they are actually 19 inch rim centers made into 16s and home welded. The tractor is more useful with the low range and on the road the Hi range makes it FLY!, WAAAAY too fast for my roads :P

the Hupp shifter I saw in the Craigslist pics when I found it ( inside the red box ). Hupp Hi/Lo is a extra transmission fitted inside the case, it was popular for Fords and Fergusons, it was an alternative to the Sherman transmission. Like the Sherman it could be purchased in several variations. The tractor can be run in its normal gear ranges as well. It gives you 12 forward speeds and 3 reverse speeds.

The TO20 was made in the USA, the TE20s were made in Coventry, England. After Harry Ferguson's falling out with Henry Ford he had his TE20 and variants made in England until he could set up manufacturing in the US. His 3 point hitch setup was and is still an Iconic revolution in the way tractors were made, virtually all tractors today have the 3 point hitch that started on the Little Grey Fergie. The engines are the same on mine but the manifold is different. There are other basic differences such as the one piece grill on the TO and a 3 piece on the TEs. Other differences include a cast iron transmission case on the TO when the TEs were a magnesium alloy. Also the transmission cover and the steering gear are one piece on the TE and 2 piece on the TO

Very nice Harry Ferguson that you have! These are very good running "simple machines" that do a lot of work. These tractors are really heavy duty (before Ford lightened and cheapened them down). Nice Purchase!
