Mini NC Cubfest - Saturday, January 19, 2013

Postby Dale Finch » Mon Oct 29, 2012 4:57 pm

I have a couple projects to do on my tractors (2 Cubs and a SA) and decided it would be more fun if I did them with other folks, so....

I spoke with the gentleman (William) who owns Brown's Auto and Collision where I have been working on my tractors over the last 3 years, and he said it would be OK with him if I brought my tractor(s) in and invited some of the local NC area folks to bring theirs also. (Or you are welcome to just come and watch and help!)

It is quite a large heated shop, with air, jacks, engine hoist, press, etc. There are restaurants right down the street. Also, there is a field next door where we can park cars and trailers. Bathrooms, so no need to have a port-a-potty, and water to wash up (us and the tractors). Might even be able to do some painting if planned in advance.

He said the field next door is used during December to sell Christmas trees, so I was thinking sometime in January...maybe Jan 12, 2013? If you are interested in coming, let me know so I can work on this. There are a lot of folks in the immediate area that I know I haven't met yet, & a few I have. This would be a good time to meet each other & get ready for spring! :{_}:

Could be lots of fun! It would be nice to take my super a-1 but not real sure if i have a good enough reason. of course it shouldn't keep me from going anyhow. :-)

Would love to be there. Joel bring your Super A-1 we'll think of something to do to it....Speaking of, Dale if you start putting a project list together I could use some help with helicoiling some worn implement holes in the torque tube of my Super A--the ones the same size as the mounting bolts on a Cub.

Al, I have the helicoil set for the SA finals...aren't they the same size as the implement holes on the torque tube? I also have a large drill that I used with my final, so we should be set.

Hey, although the shop is on a major road (15-501 toward Pittsboro, at Cole Park Plaza) there is a back way that would let us drive our tractors to the restaurant to get lunch...if they are running! Wouldn't folks get a kick out if that?!

It would be great if you could both come, Al and Joel!

Dale, the ones in the torque tube are the same size as the Cub implement bolts. The ones in the Super A finals are bigger. I don't mind buying a helicoil kit if I have someone to help me with it. Plus these holes are "open" into the torque tube so it'll be easy to drill out--no bottoming tap needed.

I hope it works out for you. It would be great to have a fest so close. I would like to host one myself one of these days, but that'll be a while off so I have to live vicariously through others for the time being....

I may have both sizes, I will have to check. I know I was looking for them on eBay, just can't remember if I got both sizes. In any case, eBay seems to be the best place to get them cheap!

I certainly could not even think about doing this if the shop hadn't been offered, since I do not have the facilities like Boss and those guys have with air and such. Also, without the nearby restaurants, there is no way I would be able to feed anyone...the emergency rooms would be full!! My hats off to anyone who sponsors a REAL cubfest! I really think we can have a good day. Does the 12th of Jan seem reasonable? Don't want to conflict with anyone else's scheduled event. Hope this works out.

OK,
I have one of those Stripped holes in the usual Place on the 49, where the Sickle mower attaches in the rear at the top. I would love to get that repaired BUT Mostly would enjoy the local "Parade" to lunch. Don't put me down for getting work done as I rather help others and will. You can put me down to be there and help any way I can.
Thanks for doing this too!

Maybe we can start a new idea for the future, too. (Or maybe this has been done before?) We could have little mini-fests all around the area sort of like a barn building, where folks post there project and we schedule a gathering at THEIR place, bringing tools, hoist, helicoils, etc. It would be easier than trailering tractors all over the area (some folks don't have a trailer), and I know there are folks with specialty tools (e.g. tank neck straightening tool, carb flattening plate, etc) that perhaps could be talked into travelling with them. We could have one each weekend and anyone that wants a road trip, could join. Most of us live within two hours of each other.

What do you think?

Dale I think that is a good idea. It's a pie-in-the-sky idea for me right now but I would love to host a full-throttle fest one day, perhaps even with some field work going on. The closest "big" fest to me is Boss Hog's and that's 3 hrs. away for me so I think we could use something else on the east coast. It'll be a while though. Got to finish this Ed.D, build a house and a shop, etc. But I am writing the dissertation as we speak and the foundation was started on the house last week, so maybe it won't be too far off....

I would love to take my super a-1 even if I didn't have too much of a reason, but I don't know if I can haul it... truck should be able to pull 5000lbs... but I've never tried it. Also, I'd have o rent a trailer...I've not done any of the work I've planned to on it... I hope to do some before then though. We're in the middle of getting ready for our barn raising... also i got promoted at work... now I'm in charge of a group of people. So that's keeping me pretty busy. anyhow. I'm hoping to sometime this winter do the following.. maybe some will need doing still in January.
    flush transmission fluid
    clean carb/carb kit
    valve adjustment
    adjust clutch

If I got crazy the front seal is leaking ...also might replace the brakes.. but some of my problem is parts cost money. :)

Joel, if you still have stuff to do on your beast in Jan, I'm sure we could work something out. OR...we could just go ahead and start a "roaming" Cubfest series. One weekend at your place, one weekend at danovercash's, then on to the next!

So who wants to be first? And when & where? What needs doing with the Moneypit?

On a seperate subject, has anyone been to the 100+ YEARS OF PROGRESS SHOW in Carthage? It's this weekend Nov 2-4.

Dale, anti-freeze came out of the head and bottom of radiator, also slight knock at low rpms and under load. Been parked since 2008. Rock shaft needs to be swiched the '63. Rear tire and wheel is on '63 as the original has a split in front of a lug and is flat.
