I'm in to help! I might not be staying overnight but I'll be back in the a.m. and I'll be depositing into the "cub fund" box generously. It's not too far away & with the phycho wife & two small kids, I think I'd better be home late on Sat. night & bug out early Sunday. I'll probably bring my son with me Sunday. I need to assemble everything I would possibly need for the '59.
Needed items:
1)Carb kit,
2)head gasket (head came off when loostening the piston(s) with kroil
3)new battery (where should I buy?).
4)plugs/wires

I have the new fuel tank/hood, fuel bowl, air tube, pto controll lever, battery box and fuel line plus two front tires/rims.
Anything else I should be thinking about for an initial start up?
Dave

Is it ok to post this cubfest info on the 154/185/184 forum too? There are many cub owners there in our area too. This turnout could be bigger than we expected.

Batteries??? I needed batteries for my two cub cadets and i need new batteries in my two cars (there 5 years old now and still good) I will put new batteries in my cars and the old ones go in the cadets. Its just an idea i wanted to pass on its a win/win situation for us.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Ok guys, here's the plan as I see it now since the other "off thread" idea that was proposed probably won't work out for this year, but we will talk about it for next year. ArtieT - we'll make it happen somehow!

1) CTdave seems to be chomping at the bit to get his '59 Cub up and running. This will be one project. Cecil, with your experience with rebuilding Cubs, would you be willing to work with CTdave and head up this as a project?
2) Artc (Zagray Farm contact) previously told us about a Cub power unit that the farm has. He gave me some additional information on this piece of equipment. QVEA will pay for all the parts, we just need to determine what is needed. John (blackjeep), would you be interested in figuring out what is needed and getting the stuff together?
artc wrote;
"We have the power unit, non running, loose. starter is off, rebuilt and in the oil shed, that could be worked on to whatever level the guys want to go, fluid change, carb rebuild, ignition work and gas is probably all it needs to run. could clean it up and paint it if its not a smoker. It is missing the hood and everything to the rear of the flywheel, if anyone has any of that hardware. it could then be setup to run a sheller or something. we have flat belts around."

Peter,

I saw Art C. tonight, he told me where to find the power unit. I'll try to get up there by next weekend to get a look at it and post some pictures.

I'm really looking forward to this event!

OK, so I couldn't wait until next week to check this power unit out... :lol:

Below is a sample of photos I took this morning. It looks to be in pretty good shape as Art mentioned. It's missing a few pieces, including everything behind the flywheel. Since I'm not really familiar with these units, maybe you guys can see what else is missing?

All of the photos of this unit are online line here http://cubcollector.com/photos/misc/Cub%20Power%20Unit/index.html

While viewing the photos linked above, a couple of tips:
1) If you click on the right half of the photo it will go to the next photo.
2) If you click the left half it will go to the previous photo.
3) If you want the original hi res version of a photo you are viewing, click on the little down arrow thing in the upper right corner of the photo. Be patient, the files are about 700k.

Cool stuff!
John

John,

Great photos. Here's what I see with just a quick look:

* air cleaner cap, pipe, hoses and clamps
* IH carb kit - may need idle tube and/or float as you get into carb
* safety fuel cap
* fuel strainer assembly (or bowl, bail, screen & gasket)
* distributor cap, rotor?, points & condensor set, one clip is missing
* 4 Champion D-21s
* plug and coil wire set
* 4 quarts of your favorite 30 wt oil
* oil filter element, gasket & bolt gasket
* valve cover, oil pan and oil drain plug gaskets
* gallon+ of antifreeze
* PB Blaster or Kroil
* Seafoam
* MMO
* carb cleaner
* muffler & clamp if you're feeling frisky :D

I may have missed a few things. We'll see what others suggest.

If someone has a spare starter and battery you might want to bring them along. Or you will need a crank. I think it might be easier to use a borrowed starter on initial start-up. Perhaps a coil and some wire in case the mag is not functioning. Unless of course Magman is attending.

Can't tell from the pictures if the flywheel has a ring gear... many didn't.

The project will need some way to build some kind of stand to get it up to a convenient height so it can be drained and cranked, and also for the benefit of the geezers who may work on it! :D :D :shock:

By this I'm guessing that it has the ring gear installed.

if you find the parts to put a flat pulley on it. then after mounting to a stand remove the plugs, belt it up to another cub and turn it over until you get oil pressure, run for five more minutes stop put the plugs in it and start it up

George,

It looks to have a ring gear, you can see it in this photo http://cubcollector.com/photos/misc/Cub%20Power%20Unit/slides/photo15.html

It also has a nice lifting ring attached to the head bolts, looks to be original. This should make it easy to move around with ArtC's newly restored fork lift. :D

As for a stand, I'm with you, I don't work well at ground level.. Maybe we can come up with something already at the farm.

OK, now I have to go back to out my garage, or else I'll be bringing my '52 Cub to the CubFest in boxes.. :oops:

Is there anyway I can get there and measure the base now so i can fabricate a stand now?? Or can you draw up what you need and get it to me?

I have some scrap steel sitting here so material and cutting/welding is on me. I want to do something. BigBill
