Shallow Creek Cubfest is over

Postby Bob McCarty » Sun Oct 22, 2023 6:59 pm

I'd like to thank Bill and Rosie for a great weekend. Lots of projects got done, or almost completed. The food selection was fantastic (thanks Rosie!). I think everyone had a good time. A little rain, but not enough to cause any problems.

Thanks, Bob

I arrived home around 5:30, after stopping in Mt. Airy, NC ("Mayberry"!) to load up a golf cart I bought on the way north to Barnyard's.

I'll post some photos (tomorrow, hopefully), but I also want to thank Bill & Rosie for a great Cubfest. The smaller group than at the Bash was nice since things weren't quite as frenetic! A good group of knowledgeable folks! And I was VERY fortunate to have the assistance of several guys!

Frank, you were EXTREMELY patient with me, and without your help, I never would have finished up the mower installation!

I also had help from many other folks...some welding jobs, valve adjustments, straightening parts, etc, etc! This is what Cubfests are all about!! Thanks, EVERYONE!! Hope to see everyone at Bill's Barnyard Bash next June!

Take care of yourself, Bill, and thanks, again!

I would also like to thank Bill and Rosie for hosting a wonderful Cub Fest! Also want to thank Regina for helping Rosie with all of the great food! As mentioned, was smaller than the Bash, but there were a lot of projects going on. And in the true spirit of a Cub Fest, the help and sharing of knowledge was abundant! Was a fun 3 days, great to see old friends and meet a few new ones.
Thanks again,
David

As I’ve said before, small group but a good group. The shop was pretty busy, this time, and a lot got done. I mostly concentrated on engine assembly on Bill’s BN and the short block went together well. My thank to Bill and Rosie, as Bob mentioned, the food was excellent! I also want to thank my helpers, David, Steve and Richard. We don’t generally do this sort of work, at a Cubfest but I’ve always wanted to so this project. Just for the record, Bill didn’t ask me to do this.

Thank you, Bill and Rosie for hosting a great CubFest. My friend Dave and I had a wonderful time.

Thanks Bill and Rosie! My Dad and I had a great time!

Thanks Bob for helping me with the carburetor! Glad it just turned out to be a float adjustment! Enjoyed learning how to adjust the valves on Dale's tractor as well! I think one of my favorite parts was seeing Bill's face when he got his non-running tractor fired up for the first time. He looked as happy as a little kid in a toy store haha!

Looking forward to the next one next year in June!

Well! It took me a bit longer than I had planned to post these photos...the grass grew considerably while I was playing up north, plus we had freezing weather coming this week, so much work to prepare for it!

These may not be a complete show of the work that was accomplished, because I was rather busy trying to figure out the "FH Mower Puzzle" and didn't get much of chance to watch the other projects!!

Left spindle shifted to the rear.

20231019_151335 (Small).jpg
Removed Clamp bolts and the center bolt...supposed to be a pin! Center hole is a bit wallered out, so a shim was installed to tighten it up.

20231019_165833 (Small).jpg
After rotating the spindle forward into the correct position, installed new bolts/nuts and a new center pin. Clamped down TIGHT!!

Then I received help with adjusting the valves:

Enjoying one the many fine meals prepared by Rosie!!

The idler pulley carriage bolts...modified to secure them better from turning in the channel.

20231021_121933 (Small).jpg
Frank straightening one of the mower skids.

20231021_151923 (Small).jpg
A badly worn mower skid that was repaired/patched.

20231021_122239 (Small).jpg
A "blob" of weld added to the worn/grooved throttle lever ...to be ground to the proper shape for better latching.

20231021_151959 (Small).jpg
The main project of the weekend! It took almost the entire group to figure out the mounting of the new-to-me Woods 42CF-6 mower. What a pain this one was!! Even had the manual! Not AT ALL the same as my 3 other Woods 42 mowers!

I truly apologize for not having photos of the other projects going on. Guess we'll all just have to do it again at the Bash next June!! :{_}:

How did the mower work when you tried it?
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

I haven't tried it since I got it home...only the little bit I did at your place, but I think it'll be fine! It is actually right here in my garage at home, waiting for me to complete its annual service.
Also, I had almost forgotten that one of the guys pointed out that the main overrunning clutch sheave on the mower deck had some cracks, so I'm not sure I will run it much until I find a replacement.

I am also thinking about removing the mower/mule drive, now that I know how they went together, so I can do a rear seal replacement and have the mower sandblasted for painting. Nice winter project at the rate I'm going!!
