Powder Coat Curing Oven

I am about to start building a curing oven and get setup for powder coating. I was amazed at how inexpensive the guns are now. You can get a decent gun for about $100 and a dual voltage for about $160 (Eastwood) and the powders are a lot cheaper than I thought also. The size of the oven right now is set for 4 ft wide, 4 ft deep and 6 ft tall. This should allow me to cure most things that i have in mind (The Continental Belton KA-5 mower that I am rebuilding). As far as the temperature controls I have everthing already on hand. I have found affordable insulation 3" thick(Fire Rated Batts) for about $120 (130 sqft). I already have two bundles of metal studs which I am going to use to build the enclosure then sheet with 28 ga steel. All in all it should be fairly straight forward. I will be posting pictures soon.

Hmmmm... that does look interesting doesn't it :?: Useful project if you are going to powder coat a lot of parts/implements/Cubs  :D

If you have a Habitat for Humanity Restore store in your area, you could find most of this stuff cheap. A goodly part anyways like steel studs, fire rated insulation (from plant demolitions) and maybe even the steel panning.

I've been wanting to build an oven for some time, currently I can only powder coat small items that I can cure in a standard kitchen range oven. I scrapped out a kitchen range a couple years ago, saving the heating elements and controls. Maybe some day I'll get around to that project. At any rate, I really enjoyed reading about the one in the link. Please keep us informed as the project proceeds.

I may be putting the cart before the horse a little here but I just couldn't pass up the Harbor Freight Powder Coat Gun for $69.....so have gun.....no oven....

The reviews are good for the most part.....but I am just looking for a starting setup and maybe later getting a higher end dual voltage gun. I will do some test runs in a small oven I have to see how it goes.....more pics to come.

If you look at the Eastwood web site, you'll find infrared heaters designed for curing powder. I've never tried it either, though.

I wprk for a really small company and i have recently gotten into all of our production pwder coating.i had to build our full setup on a small buget yet useful for production. I went to teds fab for our oven. They also sell controls for home built ovens. I just built a new booth out of metal studs and sheet metal.
When i first started coating i used a harbor freight gun.it worked pretty well but is noy easy to change colors. Columbia coatings is a good place for powder.they have a good selection anlt a decent price. Also they have ih and cub cadet colors.
If you have any questions about anything just ask.

I see posting for gun mods for the HF powder coat gun. Was the HF PC gun you used modified in any way?

It was completely stock. did not have any problems with it. Just could not adjust the power level and changing powder colors is not too easy. I have a new gun now from columbia coatings.
