Changes to my corn grinder New PICS.added pics

Got a project that you are working on that is not a tractor? Maybe a barn to hold your tractors or just fun stuff like woodworking, glass, tools, sheds, gardens, custom implements, etc., this is the place to talk about it.

Changes to my corn grinder New PICS.added pics

Postby ScottyD'sdad » Wed Mar 07, 2012 5:28 pm

I've been working on my corn grinder, this winter. After several seasons of struggling with belt alignment issues, on loose filled soil, I decided to make a one piece assembly, powered with a power unit. Still belt driven, but all mounted on a frame. I had been using a cub final drive, for pto speed reduction, and still needed it, for the new set up. I'm trying to keep the width reasonable, so I needed to shorten the upper axle, and make a new pulley, which overlaps part of the final drive. The pulley for the original set up, needed to stick out beyond the rear tires, so the belt would clear the tires. I brought the parts to the county agricultural high school, for consultation, and hopefully, some lathe work. They were able to turn down the short axle, to accept a flexable coupler, add a keyway, and cut off the excess. They also made me a pulley hub, to mount on the final drive hub, and dress up the edges, of the 6 inch well casing pipe, I provided, The previous pulley was the same type of pipe, welded to a car wheel, that matched the final. I brought the parts home, to trial fit, and to decide where the hub has to go. I'll return the pulley parts to the school, for welding. I have no way to true up the alignment, on this pulley. I was able to weld the first one, myself. Pictures of the school modified parts will follow, if I can get someone to post them, from my e-mailed photos. (need to get my daughter to put them on the computer, for me. Hope to have its debut, at ConnectiCubfest. Ed

Ed,

Waiting for the pics with baited breath. :) :) Sounds like a real neat setup. To bad that the CT CubFest is not closer.

I'll send a couple of pics, of the shaft and pulley machine work, by the school kids. More pics will follow, as I progress. (Now that my donut dispenser/boat anchor/dog tie out/wheel chock, project is finished, it will go faster) Ed

Gee Bob, I think you ruffled Ed's feathers a bit.

Ed, I'm back from my meeting. All they wanted to do was talk about Jeeps. Nobody wanted to talk about tractors.

Here are Ed's pix. Can you spot the hidden chocolate eclair?

In the axle photos, the one on the left, is the one I used originally. The spline end was turned down, to 3/4 inch, and a coupler added, to connect to the pto. Right photo, the new axle, shortened, and turned down, to 1 3/8, for a new coupler half.
The pulley photos show the hub, mate to fit the cub rear wheel mount on the axle, and the well casing pipe, to be the pulley. I attached and measured, yesterday, and will take those parts back, to be welded together. I have no way to hold the parts, accurately enough, to get it to run true. I welded the old pulley, which was welded to a car wheel center. A strap, across the lug bolts, holding a length of threaded rod, and a wooden end plate, held that. I tightened it down, ran the pto, and tapped and tightened, until it ran true, and welded it. More pictures, next week. Ed

Picked up the welded together pulley, today. Looks really good. I'll be working on the clutch assembly, and then will get some pictures. Ed

Finished getting the baler clutch hooked up, and working. Took the whole thing apart, to finish welding on the frame, wire wheeling and painting. I had tack welded a lot of the pieces, to allow for revisions. Now that everything is correct, its time to properly weld it all. Hopefully, I'll have it back together, and pictures, this weekend. Ed
