New Workbench in the Barn

Got a project that you are working on that is not a tractor? Maybe a barn to hold your tractors or just fun stuff like woodworking, glass, tools, sheds, gardens, custom implements, etc., this is the place to talk about it.

New Workbench in the Barn

Postby Stanton » Mon Jun 11, 2018 8:56 pm

Picked up some 2x4s and 2x6s from a house construction site (from the trash pile) and decided I needed a workbench. Made a similar styled one for my basement workshop some years back and it turned out nice; very sturdy. Two 2x4s glued together for each leg and connecting stringers at base; 2x6 stringers between legs--(2) below, (2) under a 36"x6'8" solid, slab door. Mortise and tendon joints and bolts hold it together. A piece of 1/8" masonite hardboard was cut to fit the top; it's tacked around the perimeter and can be replaced when worn out.

Once the bench was built, I needed a vise. Wanted an good ol' USA made one, but people selling them on Craig*list want too much. Attended a couple auctions over the last month and didn't find one. Then, last Saturday, we attended an auction that wasn't too big, but had tools (and pictures on their website). They had a nice 5" Wilton vise with anvil and also listed "Old Vise". Ended up buying this old one because they sold it off before the other one. Brought it home, dismantled it, degreased and wire wheeled it down. Jaw opening width is over 5-1/2" on a 5" width.

It fits the bench well and works nice.

Nice! The early, good Craftsman vises were made by Columbian out of real cast iron.

Wonderful bench construction -I saw on another thread. You showed how classic mortise and tenon fits strongly together. Remade by other good sections. These good sections are the ones which lasted for years. You just can't go to Lowes and find that particular section of longer board. I salute you to understand good wood so impregnated with copper whatever. They haven't done that for decades. You are doing service to the whole recycle deal by utilizing those sections.

Great vises are greater when attached over a bench leg.

Very nice bench and vise!

We have (3) Columbian Vises that are mounted to steel work tables and have sat outside for 30 plus years (little larger than yours and non-rotating base). My grandfather got them from US Steel when they wanted to clean up and throw away certain areas. We use them at least 2-3 times a week and have done some pretty heavy beating on them. Never once a problem. We have around 3 more vices laying in the floor of the shop and not sure the brand of those. Could quite possibly be Colombian too.

Got a couple pictures of the vices on the welding trailer and also the one on the workbench. Picked them up at auctions over the years.
