I'm going to be changing ISPs in a little while. Thus I will be loosing my email address of many years. I am hoping some of you can comment on options you are using or have tried. I can use an email address from the new ISP, but was considering going through something more portable like Gmail.
When I changed to my current ISP, I tried going through another address (I have forgotten what) and found about a 24 hour lag between them getting an email and their forwarding it. Needless to say, that get dropped. I am looking for anyone's comments on similar experiences, good or bad. I am not trying to take a survey. It will not be useful to get 30 posts that say "I'm using gmail" or "I use Yahoo". However, a comment that says "gmail is slow (quantified!)", or that "Hotmail's spam filter is blocking all mail from rogers.com" or that "Foomail inserts an advertisement at the end of each email" would be helpful.
Anyone have some comments? I'm going to hate breaking something that has been working well.

Re: Email Addresses and Service
Jim years ago I had AOL then lost the ability to get to it then later was able to get back to it. All this caused confusion with a multitude of access provider email addresses. Finally I went with Yahoo and have been with them for years. This way no matter who my provider is I don't have to change my email address.

Re: Email Addresses and Service
Jim,
I'll qualify this up front. Gmail is my favorite email program because of it's portability as well as functionality.
Please read the two articles I have linked below.
Just create you a Gmail account, then import your information as per these instructions.
I use Gmail on my desktop, laptop, iPad and iPhone. You can use the Internet access, or if you use an Apple device there is an App for Gmail so that you don't even have to open your browser. I would think there is probably an app for Android as well.

I be happy to answer any questions or concerns that I can for you.

Re: Email Addresses and Service
When I had to change several years back, went to gmail with no regrets.
