Farmall Cub

I've had a nice set of Craftsman files my father gave me many years ago. They didn't come with handles and as they were sparingly used up until now, I never really needed them.

I've been around inet, on the Nicholson site and cannot find what size handles I should by. Size 0 or 1-4? I have a range of files sizes, but have no clue which sizes or type to buy. I also could not find a set of handles - prefer wooden.

Around here most folks use a corn cob for a handle. I didn't know they even made handles for files until I started working maintenance in a chemical plant. Even then, we just kept trying until one was found that would fit the file. I can't really help you with sizes.

I really don't buy file handles .. I turn em There are two measurements that you need to know. One if the tang length and the second is the width of the tang half way up the tang. The width determines the diameter of the hole needed to insert the tang so that it does not split the handle when it is inserted. The length of the tang determines the depth of the hole in the handle.

To ease installation heat up the tang so that the metal is hot but not cherry read. Put the handle on the tang and tap it gently on the tang to seat it.

To determine which size of handle you need, check out the diameter of the hole in the handles to figure out the corresponding number size.
