Drill Doctor

Postby Eugene » Wed Nov 02, 2011 7:14 pm

Drill Doctor 750X. Sharpens bits up to and including 3/4".

Early Christmas present. Told wife and son that's what I wanted after seeing John Puckett demonstrate his at CubArama.

Does an excellent job. Sharpened up a bunch of bits this evening including one beat up 3/4". Took me about 10 minutes to reshape and sharpen the 3/4" bit.

Cost effective. Sticker price was still on the plastic case for a 5/8" industrial grade bit - $38.95. The rescued 3/4" bit probably saved me about 1/3'd the cost of the Drill Doctor.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I will second Eugene's comments, Drill Dr. is one of the few items I have seen that lives up to it's advertisements.

I've seen them advertised. What actually does the sharpening? I always assumed it was a stone and figured it would work fine for the first few times, then when stone wears (if you can't dress it) it would not work very good and I probably be just as well off sharpening them by hand. Am I wrong?

The sharpening is done by a diamond coated wheel, and they last a very long time before needing changed, and if i remember correctly are only about $15 or $20, If you have the tools and skill to sharpen by hand, I would save the money, but most people are like me and do not have that ability. I bought mine after a friend who is a machinist told me it is what he uses to sharpen bits.

I have one as well and agree with Eugene and John. Ive had it a couple years and am very happy with it. Mine has a case to store it in when not in use. It has saved me quite a bit of money in the short time I've owned it.

A couple years ago TSC had them on a close out table at half off and I didn't buy it at that time. A couple hours later I went back and they had taken an extra $20.00 off of the 750X. I bought before they could lower the price further. A very good investment. Ted

A few years back, I purchased the smaller model (#350X) that sharpens up to 1/2" bits. Does a great job!

I have had good results with mine too. An old machinist friend of mine could do a good job by free hand but I can't.

I've got the 350 myself and have sharpened lots of bits still on my 1st dressing wheel. Money well spent. Grump

With all the good reviews on the Drill Doctor I went to the big box to get one. The only model they had was the XPK. After reading the book and seeing the video i tried it out. Short story, it's junk. The bit holder wobbles badly in the sharpening port. I'll try to find the 350 or 750 today.

I am finding that much of the time Amazon.com to be a very good place to buy tools. anything form the Helicoil kits to Drill Dr. to Dewalt , etc. They normally beat the big box stores on pice and the service is great.

:Dito: Check the below link. They currently have the DD750X for $139.95, the DD500X for $99.95, and the DD350X for $49.95, all with free shipping. Also, they have a free 180 grit replacement sharpening wheel if added to the order for any of the above 3 kits. Can't beat it! 8)

I did find the Drill Doctor at several other places. They all had the model numbers with added letters. Not sure what that means. So, thanks to everyone I'm headed to Amazon.

I have had a Drill Doctor for several years and have found it to be a very valuable and reliable piece of shop equipment. I have the adapter to allow sharpening of 3/4" bits .

I originally took my Drill Dr. to Cubarama as part of the demonstration on installing Helicoils in final drives, to make a suggestion on them due to the 21/32 bits required for the 58 Helicoil being so high priced and how to save some money. Maybe I should see if i can get a commission from them after reading this.
