Made is USA but no brand name. Numbers all over it. Smooth jaws The base slides out and the hole through the side is same size as base, but I can see no reason to turn the vise on its side as there is nothing to stop it from swiveling. Any idea who made it? Thanks
Thomas

Maybe. Can sort by several criteria to perhaps narrow down the manufacturer.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I have about 10 vises (or is the plural visi?) and I have never seen one like that. It wasn't clear...does it swivel on the base? If it swivels and locks in... would it be mounted horizontally?

I have seen one on Market Place with similar jaws called a Coach or a Carriage Makers Vise. Google that and you may find yours

It’s a strange vise. As it sits in the pic, it swivels 360 with no ‘stop’. Same if it’s removed and flipped on its side. Which kind of makes me think something is missing, but doesn’t look like it. Only reason I bought it was because I’ve never seen one like it. Looks like PO glued leather to the jaws or perhaps that’s as it should be. Thanks for the response

Well mystery solved. It’s a gunsmith’s vise. Originally called versa vice. Also called parrot vise. I suppose it’s really just a all purpose vise. And it locks in place automatically when the jaws are tightened on something.

I have rescued 3 or 4 of the big Parkers, Athols, Rock Island, etc. from scrap heaps, rehabbed them and they are really nice. Several others I got cheap and fixed them up... my favorites are the old Cole Blacksmith Swivel that rotates 360 degrees and the Parker
