When I was in high school, my best friend’s father, a machinist by trade, bought a used lathe. It weighed 1800 pounds. A number of us moved it onto a trailer and then offloaded it into the basement of their house, down a set of outside steps. Boy, was that fun... NOT! We did enjoy learning how to use it after it was in place, though.

Congrats on the lathe! Get it leveled, cleaned and oiled and you can put it to work. A Logan 14" will probably handle more than my South Bend 9"--I find too many things won't fit in mine.

Let us know your first project.

We got the lathe off the trailer with the skid steer and the heavy end set inside the shop. Cherry picker and long pry bars we finally got the lathe set inside the shop, enough to close the door. We then set the lathe on 4 each Harbor Freight dollys. Each dolly is/was rated at 1000 lbs. Two dollys broke when we set the lathe down on them.

So, that's where the lathe sets until I can get two heavy duty dollys built and my son is off work this week end.

This weekends project. Move lathe into location and wire to the shop's 3 phase electricity.

Son used the Ford Expedition to pick up and trailer the lathe. Hauled around 1000 lbs. of lathe tools inside the Expediton.

Lathe projects. None currently planned.

The whole lathe was 1500 pounds. So 1000 Harbor Freight pounds is about equal to 400 anybody else's pounds?

 Ya! I knew that but my son purchased the dollys.

The manufacturer used plywood for cross members and hard wood for the mains. Project this afternoon is repairing the dollies using 2 x 4's. One finished, one to go. The other two dollys are under the light end of the lathe, maybe they will hold up.

Son and I were discussing the dolly's quality after they broke. Thinking most folks used them for moving furniture.
